Found a generic picture but how do you stop these things from separating? Is it really that hard or is my board just shit? Had a John Boos cutting board for a month and it already has a minor separation. It's well oiled so I doubt it's because it's dry. I'm guessing it will continue to open up so I may as well get in exchanged, right?

Put oil on your board so it doesn't dry out too hard. Cutting board oil if you're retarded or a flavorless oil like canola or something similar. Just spread thin with a paper towel.

second, stop buying overpriced bullshit. It's all wood and it's all the same price. Just go to walmart and get a cutting board there for 10 bucks instead of 100 bucks for some shitty name brand.

Are those "end grain" or are they shit like the one in the OP?

>>11061213
Those boards look a great deal better than the ones I'm seeing on the johnboos site. The grain on theboardsmith site looks properly aligned. On the johnboos site the only thing I can find that is end grain are the butcher blocks and butcher block tables. And, in the limited images I can see of the butcher blocks the end grain doesn't look like it is properly aligned. There's several blocks that have runs. Johnboos is such shit that they even have these "rustic edge" cutting boards which are literally just a length of rough cut lumber from the local hardware store for a massive markup (pic). Literally, the worst cutting boards you could own.

That won't help when the solid board is cupping. That is why you use end grain piece and orient them so there's no compounded forces across the face.

>>11061447
The shit in the photo of >>11061270 only needs a cross cut saw and some sand paper. A proper end grain cutting board will need a miter box and miter saw, a hand planer, glue, and some vices/ratchet straps. Doing it without power tools would cost about $50, not including the glue and lumber which might be free or cost $100.

I bought a $3 bamboo cutting board from Target when I first moved into this apartment, never oiled it, never took extra special care of it, and it only recently cracked after over a year of daily use. Basically, what I'm saying is you paid good money for a shit product based on a brand name and you should feel ashamed of yourself. Return the broken board for a refund and spend it anywhere else, preferably on an end grain cutting board.

I've been considering this very cheap option on Amazon which has good reviews.

Putting wooden cutting boards in dishwashers is an easy ticket to making them crack.
They don't need to be power washed like that. Just hand-wash with soap and water.
If you're worried about "muh bacteria in muh knife marks" then you can bleach it, too.

>> No.11062259

Oiling too much can cause splitting, too. I apply oil generously when they're new and let it sit overnight to absorb it. Then I apply a thin surface coat of mineral oil when it gets that ashy look. Expansion and contraction is the cause of splits, and you're trying to minimize that by keeping the moisture level fairly consistent. Too much oil will also reduce the sanitizing effect that wood has through desiccation (it actively pulls moisture from the surface into the wood). Really, a wipe with a mild detergent soap and a wipe with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth and rest between usage is all that is needed to keep a good board clean. John Boos makes some good end grain butcher block, but smaller wood cutting boards will always have more risk of splitting even when well made, and especially when they are not end grain.
