Figs contain dead wasps. No, seriously. Google it. There's a snopes article and everything.

Depends on the species of fig. Common figs are parthenocarpic (celeste, brown turkey, alma, etc) and neither need nor use the fig wasp.

We had a huge Celeste tree when I was a kid. Figs are extremely delicate, to the point where contact with the leaves can discolor or damage them. Spoils quickly once ripe, and along with the delicacy explains why you can't really find fresh figs unless you grow them yourself. Fresh figs are utterly heavenly, dried figs are rather nasty and dont begin to compare to fresh, any more than dried apples compare with fresh apples. They're easy to grow if you're in the right climate, the biggest problem is keeping the squirrels and birds from lifting the entire crop. Can be turned into preserves, but are best with cheese, or just eaten whole right off the tree. I recently planted an Alma and a Texas Everbearing, and am beginning to get a decent crop, got a few dozen last year, and a few hundred this year. Next year I'll probably be overrun with them.

I need an explanation that a figless neet can access. It would be kind of dumb for me to tell people to check a fig when it's likely that they don't have any.

That's not true. Wild figs reproduce using them, but fig trees are sexually dimorphic and only one of them (idr which) accomodates the wasp. We propagate the other sex, which means no wasps.

12 And the next day when they came out from Bethania, he was hungry.

13 And when he had seen afar off a fig tree having leaves, he came if perhaps he might find any thing on it. And when he was come to it, he found nothing but leaves. For it was not the time for figs.

14 And answering he said to it: May no man hereafter eat fruit of thee any more for ever. And his disciples heard it.

19 And when evening was come, he went forth out of the city.

20 And when they passed by in the morning they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

21 And Peter remembering, said to him: Rabbi, behold the fig tree, which thou didst curse, is withered away.

22 And Jesus answering, saith to them: Have the faith of God.

Bought pic related at Big Lots on a whim.
They were great, but no one else liked them. Chewy, sweet, and grainy in the middle.
