My roommates have a shitload of these crappy third rate colored metal knives and theyre all dull as fucking piss. Would it be worth trying to sharpen them or should I just bite the bullet and get a replacement set?
If the latter how much should I expect to spend? Keep in mind these guys dont take care of their cooking equipment for fucking shit so if I did get the replacement they wouldnt stay in great condition for long

No? Not even a "throw them out"?

I use an Accusharp pull-through sharpener on my own cheap knives.

I find they work well. The result might not be as sharp as using a real sharpener but it's much better than not sharpening knives.

just give it a good one two on each side of the blade before you put the knife away.

Every single one of us motherfucking CK posters will recommend using a sharpening stone.

So while I understand you are genuinely trying, I highly encourage you to step up your game to using a stone, because every single pull-through is shit. I post not to give you shit, but to honestly advise you to become a little more skilled.

I'm just saying it works for me. I cook a lot and I'm fine with how sharp my knives are. Sometimes communities get caught up in things that are not worth the effort, like double edged razors.

My brother bought me some of these. If you get a 1000, 4000 and 8000 grit whetstone you can make them super sharp. The metal is weak so it sharpen quickly and the think metal allows the angle to be super precise.

The only problem is you have to sharpen them every month and they chip easily.

>> No.11058914

Those are ceramic knives, dum dum. They're cheap as shit. They're also super hard, so if you try to sharpen them on anything other than a super fine diamond steel they'll likely chip. Just buy a new set or get some real knives.

I ran all my knives through my parent's three step belt sharpener and now I just use this >>11058398 before and after use and shit stays sharp. I have coated knives, but they were from Costco so they weren't terrible.

this is the fastest way. If you don't have access to a belt sander you can use a stone or a diamond stick. I personally have 3 stones from a sharpening kit that I use. But then again I've been doing this for years. If you're too retarded to figure it out just buy cheap knives and throw them away when they're dull.

stop posting please.
A 400/1000 grit combo stone is already more than can be reasonably recommended, a sheet or two of sandpaper on a brick would be more appropriate for those knives.

Might be ordinary knives with painted plain steel too, hard to tell from the pic. Those coloured shit knives have popped up everywhere in the ast couple of years.

can you pretentious fucks really not spend 5 bucks every few months on a decent budget knife?

>spend 5 bucks every few months on a decent budget knife?
This is not about beingg too cheap to buy a new knife, it's about the fact that throwing away a perfectly good knife that could have been restored to better then new condition with the slightest bit of effort is plain wrong and wasteful. It's like throwing away you car and buying a new one every time you cant be bothered to take it to the shop and have the oil change, or like smashing your windows and having new ones put in whenever they're dirty. Also $5 budget knves willinvariably be shit and make prep a hassle, and if you disagree that just means you have never worked with a really good knife.

so your're willing to pay $300+ on a knife to which you have to provide maintenance for hours per year, when you could buy a budget blade every few months for cheap? doesn't seem right. my knife doesn't run on oil, or have windows. it's best, for me, to take the chance. and if it's a bad blade, what's the harm in spending almost nothing on it?

There are plenty of really, really good knives for $80-100 available, total very intensive maintenance for a very busy hobby cook would be max 1/2-1 hour a year, and you will have a vastly superior knife for the next 15-20 years that makes cutting fun instead of a piece of shit that constantly wdges and has food stick to it and always needs twice as many cuts as a sharp knife.

>> No.11061056

>>11058091
There is virtually no tang on those knives, it's just a half inch hook, the handles break off way too easily. Toss em.
