did you cook at all before you became an adult? What'd you make?

The extent of the cooking I did was something similar to an english breakfast, and pancakes sometimes. Never anything too complicated

I tried to make caramel by microwaving white sugar in a small glass bowll. I ended up burning it and the burnt sugar got stuck on the bowl and I couldn't get it off. I decided to throw the bowl away and if my mom asked, I would tell her I accidentally broke it. Then I went out back and actually broke it so it would be easier to lie about it. She never asked about it.

Some basic, rudimentary stuff yea. Eggs, pasta. I grew up eating a lot of microwaved, shitty meals though and my family stunk at cooking, so I had to learn everything pretty much from scratch. Started cooking in high school and failed a TON before I figured out that I should probably stick to the recipes lol. Then moved out and had to learn how to cook due to being broke and was a lot more prudent about what I did with my ingredients.

Started making deserts at maybe 10 years old? Obviously nothing too crazy at that point, but slowly built my way up.

Bacon and egg rolls and pancakes were staples throughout my early teens.

I was the oldest child with two working parents so dinners were left to me a few times a week early-mid teens too. Nothing too crazy, roasts, packet spice mix chilli/tacos

That wasn't me. I have a masters degree in philosophy, which is practically useless without going on to something higher. I also have minors in aspergers and alcoholism, so academia really wasn't for me. I fit right in working in a kitchen, even though I want to kill myself every day.

The only thing I remember cooking prior to the alcohol and cocaine fueled blur that was age 16-25 was a fucking great sandwich. When I was 12 or so, going through pubescent growth spurts, I'd take a whole loaf of french bread, layer salami, ham, roast beef, mozarella, and provolone on it, then broil it. I'd do this about 11pm when my parents had gone asleep. They'd ask a few days later, "Didn't I buy a loaf of french bread?"

Simple shit. Mostly beans, rice, potatoes and eggs towards the end of my childhood. Mom was in and out of the hospital and dad worked two jobs (he couldn't cook anyway, insisted it was the woman of the house kind of job).

My parents both worked full time and slept all day so pretty much by the time my brother and I were able to dress and shit by ourselves, my mom taught us how to use the stove, a can opener, and wash up. We’d cook basic shit, usually we’d just make soup and toast or toast with sweet milk, but we also knew how to make beans and rice, grilled cheese, and fry eggs and sausages. Later on was a lot of one-pot meals and casseroles, or just about anything you could dump over rice and call dinner. I started cooking professionally at 17. I’m 25 and I still cook and I kind of hate it but it pays well and I have no education so I guess i’ll hang on

I loved the studying/reading/writing part of it, and published a few papers during that time. It's just when I got into grad school and realized I needed to lecture and lead discussions - not to mention the fucking politics of academia - I realized it just wasn't for me.
