There's something to this.

When I cook an Aussie meat pie in the microwave, I usually cover with a damp layer of paper towel. I do this cause if you enclose it in a container, it gets to soggy. If you don't cover at all it gets too dry. So I get that this is helping retain the right amount of moisture. It's still kind of disgusting, either wrapping in a fresh dish cloth or paper towel would be more hygienic.
