It's probably less something extra their minds had and more something extra our minds have i.e. our culture's normal parenting practices involve teaching you in no uncertain terms from early on in your existence that bodily fluids like urine are dirty and bad. That's probably one of the very first things most people in our culture learn.
If you don't have that sort of early indoctrination about it though and you're some free range indigenous child I think the idea of drinking urine would seem a lot less fucked up.
It's also not confined to just one culture, a lot of places around the world have traditions involving urine consumption e.g. They'll sometimes have people drink their own urine as a way to try to purify them from disease.
And obviously the example you described is even more justifiable since that really does work as a way to get psychoactive effects from a poison diluted enough to not give you the bad poisoned effects.
The one I heard about along those lines involved not drinking urine from another human but rather drinking the urine of some animal who could better handle the poison (I'll try to look it up in a bit, forget which animal and which culture that was specifically).

^This. Urine trick isn't that impressive, I think people probably learned that by noticing animals doing it.
Ayahuasca is fucking crazy though because there are so many plants / chemicals in the Amazon basin and there's no way you would hit on that specific right combination by pure accident. There has to be some way someone was able to figure it out that wasn't trial and error, although I have no clue what that way would be. The tradition told by the indigenous people do this is that they learned the information from psychic communication with plant intelligence.
