Sounds like you didn't wash them well enough. Ironically, peeling your potatoes sometimes saves energy you'd spend on scrubbing them.

But if you actually had a dedicated brush/sponge for veggies, or just really careful washing by hand, they would've been fine with skin on. I've found russet skins to be pretty coarse, but they can still be pretty much just a visual thing if you boil your taters long enough. Try a thinner-skinned variety like red or gold potatoes next time. Use less butter or cream/milk if you do, though, since they'll wind up a thinner consistency as well.

If leaving the skin on is good or not depends on the size of the potatoes. Big russets are going to have skin that's a lot tougher than smaller red potatoes. Leaving the skin on is okay if they're going to be fried or crisped up in some way, but for mashed potatoes it's usually better to peel them.
