I like split peas and lentils more. Same sort of starchy idea with protein, but it tastes even more like a meal-in-itself. Especially if you add things like marjoram and rosemary to them. It's like a full course meal, and I don't even miss the meat (although I will often eat them with some kind of meat). Can't beat the taste.

Used to be a black beans and white beans man myself, but now, I've recognized the superiority of chickpeas / garbanzo beans.
