Hi /ck/

Can you recommend me a mixed drink recipe that can help make whisky taste better for lighter drinkers, but is a little bit classier than mixing it with coke or coffee? Thanks

tennessee tea: equal parts whiskey, lemon juice, triple sec (or Cointreau if you're money). can be had alone or mixed with cola.

alternatively switch to J&B and soda water. that's a real gentleman's drink.

this is another great and cheap option. the ancient Greeks didn't drink wine straight, they diluted it with water. only barbarians drank alcohol at cask strength. you want to be like the fathers of democracy, don't you?

Was with a friend of mine who won't drink whisky at all, and he very much so enjoyed an Old Fashioned that I made him the other night.

1oz Makers
1oz Dark Horse (Dark Batch)
whatever clump of brown sugar
6 dashes angostura (as an experiment, usually less)
No soda water
Orange slices
Full of ice.

An Old-fashioned. It's a proper cocktail, and will make good whiskey even better, will be excellent with great whiskey and make shitty whiskey drinkable. I like them with rye, personally, but I'm a weirdo.

Parts list:
2oz of whiskey (Bourbon or rye)
1 sugar cube
Angostura bitters
Orange peel
Some large ice cubes.

>Get your rocks glass
>Put a sugar cube in
>Apply 2-3 dashes of bitters to the sugar cube
>Muddle until it's somewhat a syrup, add a few drops of water if needed.
>Add whiskey
>stir
>Add ice
>Take a strip of lemon or orange peel
>Twist and crush over the glass so the oils land on top of the cocktail
>drop peel into the drink
>Serve.

It's just a name given to it.

Another mix is a Godfather, like the film that inspired the name.

1 part Whiskey of any type
1 part Amaretto
serve over ice.

Modify to your tastes because of the sweetness of Amaretto can be a bit too much for some. Some people swear by Disaronno but I just regard Amaretto as just another mixer.

Somehow I had no idea they did Kentucky mules. I just went to my bar and they called it a Tennessee mule, but same thing. I'm a huge bourbon drinker, but almost always in a manhattan or just on the rocks. My bartender wanted to try out a new ginger beer they had just ordered and made me a couple Tennessee mules. Fuck they're good. Really refreshing, go down like nothing, and can have a nice kick with a decent pour. Went out and bought some good ginger beer and have been making them at home since it's hot as balls out and I've been doing a ton of yardwork lately.

Depends on what you mean by "classy" since most drinks I'd consider "classy" are high proof, but here's a drinkable mix above collegefriend tier:

(lazy) Southern John Daly

In a highball or pint glass, combine:
-1.5oz whiskey (bourbon usually)
-.75oz lemon juice
-Ice
-Top with Arnold Palmer Half&Half (I use lite since the full-sugar is too sweet)
-Lemon wedge (1/6th) for garnish

Looks nice, tastes nice, is low proof. The basic concept is iced tea+lemonade+whiskey and if you want to classmaxx you can look up John Daly recipes made from scratch, but for some reason tea can be too "soapy" for mixes sometimes so I prefer the tea in a can. Make sure to use straight whiskey and not some rotgut brown vodka made from 49% or more industrial alcohol like Ten High or Seagram's Seven or else there'll be a taste of rubbing alcohol that you can't remove.

Personally, I prefer whiskey straight and would rather use a spirit that's more more "interesting" mixed, so for a non-whiskey recommendation, you should consider a Gin&Tonic. Try it with New Amsterdam Gin, it's effectively lemon vodka with a little something extra and is a very good intro to gin that doesn't trip people up with Muh Pine. Mixers: whatever tonic water from your local grocery store and lemon or lime wedge squeezed on top

Bourbon is my most frequent liquor that I drink and my go to is a Mint Julep which would probably help ease you into drinking it neat at some point, I'd recommend trying out juleps with different bourbons/whiskys and give the lavender julep a try too since they're both quite good.

The recipe is incredibly easy. Make a simple syrup with either mint or lavender, fill a metal cup (preferably copper, similar to a mule) with ice and then use 1/4th the amount of syrup compared to the bourbon you put in and garnish with whichever herb you decided to make the syrup out of.

The goal here isn't to remove the taste of the bourbon entirely (though the colder you make a drink the less you'll be able to taste any complexities which is the point of finer bourbons) but to accentuate it's flavor with something sweeter. Bourbons that I would start with for this drink would be Southern Comfort, Tin Cup, or Wild Turkey 101 in that order. All of these are less refined bourbons and are more suited to this kind of drink which will get you acclimated to the taste
