Why do Americans literally always cook bacon until it's completely rendered down and burned to a crisp when it's better when cooked until tender and succulent?

I actually prefer it crispy. Tender bacon is good on ensembles, but by itself it's not that great. Crumbled bacon is also extremely versatile.
