I was looking for a job as a pastry cook. Got an interview at a pastry shop ten miles away from my home. Came in for a stage two days later and saw the majority of their shit came out of a bagged mix, even the mousse came out of a mix. They had creme brulee that was being torched and then put in refrigerated display cases which would then cause the caramel to dissolve and turn into a syrup. They offered me a job but I didn't accept it.

CA recently banned the box completely. they can't ask you about your record until they've shown an interest in hiring you.

for the most part, misdemeanors don't hurt your chances of getting a good job with a few specific exceptions (dui = no driving, public indecency = no kids, etc). felons with no work experience really get a bad wrap because most entry jobs automatically disqualify felons. felons with 10 years in a kitchen? easy line cook job anywhere.

So many walmart-esque jobs where I aced the assessment got the interview got the second interview immediately and the managers were all stoked to have me. A felon with 0 experience will likely have a very difficult time applying for anything that does a background check. Mom and pops or construction is your best best. A regular person with 0 experience? Just bite the bullet and start at retail, fast food or a restaurant. Unless you have higher education, you can't be picky. I've been looking for an entry level job (in college still with 3 years to go) for 4 years and I keep getting rejected. I've given up hope since I got rejected from McDick's too. Whenever I ask for an application, I get told to apply online. When I apply online I don't hear anything back. When I call to follow up they tell me there's no more positions available or they're not hiring.
I've completely given up. I don't know what the fuck they're looking for to do an entry level job, but every fucking time I keep getting left out. It just crushes your soul rejection after rejection for 4 straight years.

Temp agencies are good for jobs but the jobs aren't good for you. Temp agencies can get your foot in the door but most places you work in will see you as, only a temp. Unless you're one of the dozens who are exemplary, the temp agency will usually let go of you after your probation period. That's when they lose their tax credits and/or other kick backs. You're just a temp. And resumes don't look great when you list a bunch of 3-6 month employments in succession. If desperate for experience in a RELATED field, I'd get into one. It might give you enough experience for your employer to overlook your criminal history, lack of experience, older age with no experience, etc. They also usually don't contribute to unemployment. Pays (some of) the bills at least.

I don't really buy this. I dated a girl who was legitimately autistic as well as depressed and socially anxious. I know so many small business owners who would kill for young employees who have no criminal history and can pass a drug test. Anyone in a skilled trade is watching their workers retire and the only people who apply now are methheads. I had an appliance repair guy offer to train me to take over his business. I probably should have taken him up on it but I've been involved in IT for a long time.
