I prefer Buffalo Trace to Makers, although Makers is at 45% and BT at 40% which is a downside.

I was planning to pick up a bottle of JD Single Barrel last week which Ive wanted for a while, but when I got round to going the offer they had on it was finished so I didnt bother.

Not a big fan of Jack desu.

Buffalo trace is super smooth for its price point. The only problem is it's kind of hard to find. I live in Louisville, Kentucky and I still have to scope it out. Their operation is still pretty small.

I think Eagle Rare eaked out Maker's for me since I've tried it. It's the same price point, but because it's a BT bourbon you can't find it anywhere.

>> No.10802958

>>10802925
BT is fairly easy to find in the UK. It's in most of the main supermarkets. Its also good on price..currently £18 where I shop (Standard JD is £16 by comparison).

I'd like to try some more bourbons, but I typically feel that for the same price, I can probably get a nicer Scotch or Rum than I can bourbon.

I think the good starter set for bourbon is Four Roses, Eagle Rare, Maker's, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Wild Turkey (also super good for the price)

Idk about scotch. I need to try some good one because they all taste mossy to me.

Caol Ila 12 is usually a good beginner peated Islay. If you want unpeated try Bunnahabhain 12 or Bruichladdich Classic Laddie.
>>10803363
Harmony is basically just a better Dewars 12 except it’s also double the price.
If you want something Japanese get at least Nikka Pure Malt but honestly Japanese available in the Western markets are not very good and if they are they’re usually $200 and above thanks to the stupid demand for them. If you want the tropical fruit flavours but for less money get something from Isle of Arran or unpeated Caol Ila as they make some decently economical single malts at cask strength.

You guys seem like you know your bourbons so could one of you help me out? I've tried a bunch of the more mainstream lower end stuff and my favourite has become a toss up between WT101 or bulleit. A quick search online tells me that apparently they are both high rye so I will also like something like woodford reserve. I tried that and I really don't agree with it- it's really sweet, but sorta cloying and not in a nice way. I've also tried russel's reserve single barrel, and I think it's a nice drop but it's moving away from the harsher spice/sour that I get from WT101/bulleit respectively.

What I'm trying to ask is whether there's anything out there that I should bother trying, that does what WT101/bulleit does, but better. Or am I more or less at the end of my bourbon journey and should just be satisfied that nothing else will do this 'flavour profile'/whatever better than what I've already found.

>>10803562
Mate if you get the change I absolutely recommend giving nikka black a go (assuming you're getting it for dirt cheap/close to retail). For their market's 'this is supposed to be the lowest price/and standard equivalent', it's really a lot more value/complex than it's allowed to be. I'd throw it into a 'japanese teachers/JB/you get what you pay for but for this price you should be happy you're getting it'-category.

>> No.10805658

>>10804987
I asked my boy to pick me up a fifth of Nikka Black while he's vacationing in Japan, but he forgets shit and I already owe him money so it's not likely. Also him and the other friend he's with are alcoholics lite so I don't know if they'd be able to have restraint with a bottle.

Also, the worst liquor I've ever had was Lauder's Blended scotch ($13 a fifth even with my state's large markup), so I'm a bit suspect on bargain scotches

>> No.10806070

>>10805658

manhattans are a good cover for shit whiskey. it makes JD, Benchmark, Heaven Hill, any canadian trash, etc drinkable.

If done right, it's a treat with something like Maker's Mark. You need good, FRESH vermouth (if it gets old it tastes like pencil lead), good ice, and a dash of bitters. The cherries play a big role too.

Just check the DABC site for when orders come in and at which stores. I am able to find bottles of hibiki harmony pretty regularly, but it's often stored in the back of a liquor store so you have to ask an employee.
Alternatively, develop a taste for scotch, as Japanese whisky is just a scotch copy cat. Japanese whiskey is hard to find everywhere, not just Utah.

I'm looking for some similar bottles though.
I tried Dalmore 12 the other day and it was pretty good, but still not exactly what I want.

Does anyone have a good iceball mold?
I bough this one but it fucking sucks.
It produces too small ice balls and oddly shaped ones.
They only last like 20 minutes.
I hate chucking off a chunk of an iceblock to get nice big ice cube for my whiskey.

Are you the same guy that complained that whiskey tastes like vomit/butyric acid? That's a really unusual problem and I can't tell you what'd fix it other than trying different liquors distilled from different base sugars (tequila, rum, vodka), maybe comparing barrel-aged vs clear, and trying to mix using the usual things that defeat bad alcohol flavor like lemon juice and sugar

I've tried a few startup "bourbons" out of the upper midwest and colorado that were awful. "Breckenridge Bourbon" was one I had on a Frontier airlines flight, and it's pretty typical of what I expect of these newer brands - the complexity is low and they cover up by making the end product overly sweet with simple sugars. They usually come out more like Canadian whiskey than bourbon.
