>well regarded restaurant, considered the best tap list in my city (which is a hipster mecca so that's saying something)
>weeknight, well before closing, place is mostly dead
>get good but slightly anxious service
>order an appetizer and a steak to split because we were mostly there for the beer
>almost all the beers we want are out
>get our appetizer, portion is tiny, get concerned, ask how big the steak is and what exact cut it is
>find out we ordered a $28 5oz skirt steak, get upset at ourselves and the resturaunt
>appetizer is delicious, get encouraged by prospect of an incredible 5oz skirt steak that will somehow justify the price tag
>over the next 40 minutes, watch the obviously drunk kitchen staff pour themselves the rest of the beer while waiting for our steak
>finally, watch our steak sitting in the window for 10 minutes while the waitress is on a break and none of the cooks feel like bringing it to us
>my gf, who's a waitress, is having a breakdown as i try to lobby for just walking out
>when the waitress comes back, we try to just pay for the appetizer and beer and leave
>she's practically begging us to stay and order more food, without making it clear whether we would be paying for it or not (had been there more than an hour by then and barely eaten; the place was fuckin empty the whole time); my gf is having a panic attack trying to empathize with this waitress
>eventually leave money on the table and drag my gf out
>get mcdonalds
>everyone else i know who's been to that restaurant loves it and had a great time

Was visiting portland because of I have retarded (now former) friends that thought it was a good idea to move there. They were showing me around and took me to some insanely up its own ass vegan place where every staff member was apparently some flavor of queer, nonbinary, huge gross beards, stupid piercings and hair, etc. It was like the kind of nightmare-ish degenerate hellhole the subject of some /pol/ fantasy post, but real. I really wasn't intent on filling up on pretend meat so I just settled for a side of hummus /w chips ($12). I was really uncomfortable the whole time from the scowls and glares from some of the patrons and staff, and no I wasn't wearing a MAGA hat, I just dressed conservatively. After about 20 minutes I was getting increasingly agitated from the atmosphere so I went to the gender inclusive restroom to wash my face, shit, and relax for a moment and had to brush past some fat tranny ogre adjusting his makeup.

After about 35 minutes of feeling incredibly unsatisfied, ripped off, and unwelcome, there was some sort of protest+counter protest building up outside that was getting louder and more intrusive with megaphones and people banging drums and making a lot of noise in various ways so I kept urging my friends to hurry the fuck up so we could leave as I was the designated driver). I was really stressed out at this point and was very close to snapping and running the crowd over as they didn't make it easy for us to leave.

Then a day after I find there were a shit ton of arrests at the same protest I got tangentially caught up in. Pic related.

go to a local diner that's with a 60s theme that i've been to before

order a burger with chili. when the food arrives I immediately see a black hair in the chili.

look over and happen to see the chef in the kitchen who indeed has black hair.
They replace the food and give it to me for free.
Just before I leave the restaurant feel stomach rumbling and rush to the toilet and immediately get diarrhea.

My story comes with a bit of a "moral."

I went to a Korean owned Japanese restaurant in the hipster/busy area of town. Their concept was tappas style, but to be honest, it was all over the place. Sushi, sashimi, salads, ramen, udon, bentos, fried rice, you name it. And the restaurant was absolutely hopping. Keep in mind, that this is in an in-land, predominantely white town with very little exposure to "authentic" international cuisine.

I notice that bluefin tuna sashimi was on the menu. It didn't even mention if it was lean part of the loin, or the fattier part (chuu-toro), just bluefin tuna. So I asked the Japanese-speaking waitress what is the origin of the bluefin tuna. She said "local, not Japanese." I was trying to be polite, so I just said "local, like from BC?" She replied "not Japan."

I ordered it anyway, just to see how the chef was going to present this dish. I was sitting near the kitchen, where I could barely see the expediting counter. Once the sashimi was plated and waiting on the counter, I see two Japanese waitresses whispering to each other (in Japanese): "woooww... look at the plating.." in the most sarcastic voice.

It was quite horrible, but what left an even worse taste in my mouth was the fact that these waitresses were so arrogant about them being the only Japanese people in town (they aren't), and that they have 0 pride in the restaurant they were working at. The least they could do was brush up on what they're serving, and put on a fake smile.

That now, is how a true Japanese person would work.

Two instances come to mind and both include having food spilled on me by the waitstaff.

First time was at a bar that serves pretty legit sandwiches. Order a pitcher for the table and as it was coming out, chick missed her step and I proceeded to get a beer shower. She was really sorry, honest mistake, except when the bill came the manager tried to charge me for the spilled pitcher. No idea what that fucker was thinking.

Second time I don't know what happened, but got a streaming bowl of lobster bisque down my neck. I was pretty pissed on that one, especially since the asshole who ordered it a couple tables over, very loudly complained about waiting for a second bowl. Got an apology and I don't know if they brought a bill or not, but I finished my cocktail and entree and walked the fuck out.
