Unless there's a food shortage, eating more than what you need is still a waste. If you have more than what you want to finish, just save it for later and then in a few days combine it with some other leftovers. I actually like having leftovers sometimes because mixing different foods together makes it seem like you're not eating the same thing anymore.

My grandparents had this rule. I told them I would puke if I ate anymore and they still made me "finish my plate."

So I puked all over the table instead. Never made me finish my plate ever again.
