after extensive research on /ck/, i've now collected a sizeable folder of images of paper plates in use which i call my american crockery folder. not an amerifat, but i'd say op's picture is the most popular style.
i'd speculate the pattern most closely resembles actual crockery and helps the user to feel a little less like the white trash that they are.

I think that was the one that caused a flood in Broome county New York and we lost power for a couple days. I'm glad that I had some canned foods and water stored. I was giving food away to my neighbors too because they needed it and I didn't want refrigerated stuff to go bad.

I generally prefer the more tough/stiff variety.
