Go buy the smallest bottles of whatever you can first and learn for yourself. Something truly 'good' is going to cost the money, and rightfully so. If you haven't had the classic get-fucked-cheap whiskys like KT, Kentucky Gentleman, and Barton then you're doing it all wrong. Canada makes some cheap ass whisky as well. Barton does more than just whisky too, they got cheap vodka and rum I think.
Something good, worth the money, and you're looking at just about anything over $25 for a fifth (750mL). Anything under is subjective drunkard tastes. Anything over $$45 and you're in the wrong state buying the wrong whisky.

It, like islay in general, is way overhyped by neckbeards. You should probably drink it more slowly to let the subtleties of bathroom antiseptics and world trade center smoke wash over your palate.

The neckbeard progression usually goes as follows:

Babby's first: Highland Park or Balvenie Doublewood or meme novelty cask of the week
Babby's second: Aged islays
Babby's third: younger islays or QC
Babby's fourth: Speysides and/or Japanese
Babby's fifth: wow, this is getting boring and expensive, I wonder what other drinks there are

First, any alcoholic beverage that has the word "barrel" on the label can be dismissed as garbage. You should never overtly notice the barrel, such products are aimed at neophytes for whom tasting adjuncts and such feels "sophisticated" and "cool". >that's gotten undue attention because George Clooney founded it

If you follow that train of logic far enough, you'd better give up drinking. The "premium tequila" concept woudln't exist if not for Japanese beverage industry investors. Most of the finest alcoholic beverages in the world got their start because someone famous, from a non-beverage industry, had a dream of being a glamorous lord of alcohol, and bought facilities, land, or expertise with money made elsewhere.

And so does wine. And the same rule applies to wine: if they say "barrel aged" on the bottle, it's crap, peddled to tards who think "OMG I can totally taste oak" makes them a real connoisseur now. Nobody is saying barrels are bad, anon. Or should I say, Mr. and Mrs. Anon.
