What is the safety razor of cooking?

A whetstone.
You can totally get by your entire life without having one, but if you do get one, it shows that you're willing to put in the effort.
And it also works really well

Cast iron skillet probably, but I like DE razors, cast iron can suck it. Ceramic cast iron pots might be a good safety razor equivalent.

>> No.10715189

i would say cast iron but only because it's that one thing that you're obsessed about when you're getting into the whole "I do things the superior way" phase and then you get older and develop a more broader perspective on life and realize that multiple tools exist for multiple reasons and that electric shavers are good once in a while, even superior, like stainless steel pans and aluminum non-stick.

Switched to safety razors and occasionally straight razors (when the beard is a week plus) about 2 years ago and I'm so damned glad I did.
The blades are pennies each, and you can get straight razors that use them too.
The shave you get is extremely smooth and perfectly safe once you have the technique down. Someone once said to me you will cut yourself the second time you use a straight razor, and that's exactly the case; first time you're careful, second time you think you know it all, third time you realise that you don't.
Plus it's a nice relaxing little ritual in the bathroom where you just take some time out of the day to groom yourself. I used to just shave in the shower with a Mach 3 but that extra time and care can really feel like a treat if you think of it that way; don't think of it as time wasted that you could be spending refreshing /ck/ but rather as time that's just for you to wind down and not be in a damned hurry about nothing important.
Get a decent badger or boar brush, doesn't have to be expensive. Soak it in warm water while you take a shower. If you use a soap puck instead of a paste-type soap you may want to "bloom" the soap my leaving a little water on top of that too.
After the shower take plenty of time to work up a nice later and really work it into your face. The great thing about the soap/brush instead of shaving foam from a can is that you can really work it up under the hairs. Makes for a much smoother shave even if you do still use that overpriced Mach 3.
A proper shave is three passes. You can look up a video or something on how to do that. Take your time and remember that it's a treat, not a chore.

I guess the straight razor of cooking is the mandoline so maybe the safety razor is just a decent chef's knife or Chinese cleaver.

That guy's analogy was good but his opinion on razors was shit. I've used them all, electric rotary, electric flat, and mach 3 cartridge style shit before they became 20 bucks a cartridge.

DE razors, when you learn how to use them and the closest, fastest and cheapest shave you'll ever have. Even a cheap handle and good cheap blades (100 for 20 bucks) is 10x better than any other shave you'll ever have.

no mames, wey. Or have you never experienced the joy of keeping a beard trimmer in the cupholder of your car and shaving using the side mirror.

Some people just get lazy. And for the truly lazy people electric razors are a godsend.

Razor burn is razor burn whether you get it in the bathroom or get it in the car.

When I'm feeling lazy I can scrape my face with a dry blade just fine, but electric shavers fuck me up every time.

I'll probably eventually get a safety razor handle but it's not high on my priority list. I just use disposable razors and have had no problems with them. I really only shave my neck, and occasionally my cheeks anyway. No need for any high-falutin' contraptions. Shaved with my knife a few times, gotta be real careful with that though. Fanciest thing I use on my face is a pair of scissors and a comb. I guess what I'm saying is I just use the cast iron pan.

electric razors don't work on every skin type
if they do on yours you're lucky because they're less hassle

You're only supposed to shave up until the perennial. If you hit the taint you've gone too far.
