Because they are a perfect easy lunch on buttered toast. Maybe with a little bit of HP brown sauce mixed in, washed down with a strong cup of tea to set you up for the afternoon.

Heinz beans in the UK are different to those in the US. When I lived in the States for a bit, I had to find a Tea-aboo shop to buy imported UK Heinz Beans.

If you live in New England, there's usually an english/irish area of the international aisle at Wegmans. There's also a little german section where you can get wafer cookies and real mustard.

The entire world loves beans -- especially beans and rice. I wish I could go back in time and teach myself how to make a proper meal of beans and rice. So many nights of going hungry because I thought the last $10 in my wallet couldn't pull everything together. I'd tried eating ramen or baked potatoes but it made me feel sick and weakly. The baked potatoes made me less sick -- and they do have a lot (all?) of what you need -- but they can't really compete with rice and beans. A dollar per bag and you've got $8 leftover for a $1 bottle of hot sauce, 4/$1 limes, $0.25 onion, etc. You could spend that last $8 better, but as far as making you feel like you're sitting down to a meal, rice and beans is untouchable. Psychologically that's very important -- baked potatoes are just too fucking depressing. Maybe skip the limes and onion, and get some eggs or a whole chicken. Got to have the hot sauce, though.

Also consider that methionine is easily destroyed with heat. Beans will have significantly less methionine due to their long cooking times.

>> No.10690936

That's interesting and I will look into that. However, it's worth noting that per calorie, they have over 3 times as much methionine as a normal person requires. It would take about 70% of the methionine being destroyed for that to be problematic for someone who consumes a lot of beans.
