I've never had BK but I have a hard time believing they compete well with Wendy's; the latter beats all of the burger chains I've had like McDonald's, A&W (which is actually a close second to Wendy's for me), etc.

Meal wise, BK has godly fries while Wendy's has awful fucking limp shit fries.

Burger-wise, the Whopper from BK is gas station food, seriously tastes exactly the same as a burger from AMPM.
On the other hand Dave's Double holds up even while Wendy's fucks up other things.

They use to. Back 10-15 years ago the whoppers were really tasty and had a very pronounced flame grilled taste. Now though they taste like every other burger, the patties are thin, and it just looks and tastes like a mess.

The Whopper is good only if your Burger King is good. The reason why people say Burger King is shit is because the franchise is usually ran by mouth breathing idiots. Every time I get something from Burger King there are black chared bits all over my sandwich like they forgot to clean the grill. I'd rather eat somewhere that I know wont serve me sub par food.

I think Jim might be right though. Its obviously been so long since I've had them but I always thought they tasted good. I like the current fries they have but not sure if they are better or not. Wendy's should bring them back and give the option for both.

Im pretty sure its sort of regional dependant. Here wendys is horrible, I've never had a burger from there that didn't have a borderline stale, crumbly bun that is so bad you need to tear some off and throw it away to not gag. The whoppers here certainly aren't great, but they're miles better than wendys. I find McDonalds to be completely flavorless and rarely eat it. I chalk it up to them catering to children and autists who are very picky, so their food is as bland as possible to not offend any simple palate?
