hmm i wasnt aware this was a thing. you got to consider the context of this food. You wouldn't fry an egg because, you'd be wasting precious fat to do it plus you wouldn't have the toolware to do it easily.
Eggs would cheap and plentiful in the country, and boiling them would be the easiest and safest way of making an egg.
You'd have plenty of stale bread around you could just toast it, and if you're lucky, buttter it, although the entire point is to use the egg yolk for this.
Fairly nutritious meal considering the alternative is starvation.

I wouldn't say it is necessarily a good meal in todays context, you'd have to use some hearty really good chewy bread in order for this to be excellent meal, but then again that could be a matter of personal preference.

Not a rebuttal. Sushi is any dish that uses the vinegared rice, and the word "sushi" literally means "sour rice". The different types of sushi (maki, temaki, etc) are functionally named as well.

This dish is a combination of toast and eggs. Brits call it "toast soldiers".

Firstly, the name is non-functional; there's nothing soldier-like here.

Secondly, this isn't a "lesser known british food". That would be like claiming that hand roll sushi with a bias cut is a "lesser known jap food". In other words, completely retarded.

because it originated in Japan, yes, so we use their name. Though to be fair it might have originated elsewhere as well.

toast and eggs did not originate in Britain, and toast cut into quarter slices is not enough to qualify as a uniquely British dish, as OP claimed.

Like I said earlier, this would be like cutting a sushi roll on the bias, and presenting it as a "lesser known Japanese food". It's not, it's a fucking slightly different way of preparing the same food. You can have a name for it, but calling it a lesser known food is just faggotry.
