Don't know about Alaska but in north shore New England it was called seabriatry. The captain would keep liquor on board for people who has just dried out but would start to lose it after a big storm or a long stressful 20 hour day. Not to get shitfaced but enough to get you through. Like everything else in the food service biz crews on fishing boats have a high alcohol/drug problem.
