What are some recipes for old desserts? Afro-Eurasia didn't have the sugar that is so common in modern cooking 500 years ago. I imagine honey and fruit syrups to be used in its as natural sweeteners, but I wanted to make this thread in case there's something I'm skimming over. Europe couldn't have had only fruit pies as dessert for thousands of years.

Sugar was available in Spain just before 1500AD. It was in the Mediterranean since at least 1AD but was used medicinally, honey was the favored sweetener.

There's a recipe for Roman cheesecake dating back to 200AD.

You're right, they just ate the fruit

Sumerians used honey and fruit syrups to sweeten and had some simple cake-like recipes they made. There are some old sweetened puddings and porridges and whatnot, as well as dried and fresh fruits and berries. You're right that sugar didn't make it's way to Europe until the middle ages but it was grown for hundreds of years before that in the east.

If you want recipes, you can google a few of them. I've never bothered cooking them and couldn't really make any recommendation.

How old is the concept of dessert itself anyway, as in eating a sweet morsel as the last meal of the day? Seems fairly arbitrary in all honesty.

I got a roman cookbook and practically all desserts are sweetened with honey.

Lot of stuff was flavored with rose water or other flavors that were more herbal or neutral than outright sweet or tart. Ancient Persian elite had what was essentially shaved ice, but with far weaker and shittier syrup.

wrong. sugar was cultivated and even refined to the white stage we would know today.

So then, does anyone know what type of cheese the Romans used to eat?

Here's one for you. Rome was no stranger to vinegar so it makes sense something like this would be used.

Though it should be noted there are references to extensive use of rennet coagulation well before 100 AD. Fuckers loved their cheese.

Well these aren’t ancient, just traditional from Puebla in central Mexico. Base ingredients tend to be flour, sugar, peanut, walnut, fruits, Mexican fruit not well known in the states such as mamey, chocolate, alcohol, raisins, cajeta, etc.
