Does anybody have any resources regarding making drinks that they'd recommend? I'm only a server but I'm not all that familiar with everything guests say when they're ordering drinks through me, and I'd like to be better.

it's pretty easy my dude
up means in a martini glass
straight up means neat (nothing but liquor)
with a twist means you take a lemon, pull off the peel, twist it into a spiral over the drink and garnish
rocks means ice
"jameson with a ginger back" means a shot of whiskey with a small glass of ginger ale to chase the shot
just google things when they come up

I'd rather learn what I can ahead of time. I had a guest ask for a tall vodka 7up which I assumed meant a double so that's what I got him. He never bothered to say anything when I asked how it was, hardly drank any, and it wasn't until after he left that I learned a tall is basically the exact opposite of what I served him.

There is a lot of regional difference in boozahol ordering, but generally, 'tall' means the same amount of booze, but more mixer (bigger, "tall" glass.) This can be a useful strategy when you want a drink to last a long time, like social events where you don't want to or can't get drunk. A 'double' is usually two shots of booze in the standard, short glass. There is less mixer then, so you have a stronger drink. A 'double tall' is two shots in a tall glass, which ends up being more or less the same as two normal drinks, but in one handy glass.

Anyway, learn more by digging up a copy of Mr Boston. Old ones are probably best to learn from as they'll be full of classic cocktails and terms. Cheap, too. Couple bucks used.

You don't have to know what the customer means. Most of the time they don't even know what they mean.
There should be modifier buttons on your POS that say neat, rocks, chilled, tall, etc. Just ring it in exactly as they say it.

when i was a server i had no idea either and i just honestly told them i didnt know much about drinks past rum and cokes and asked if they could clarify what they want. they all smiled and just told me in detail how they wanted their drinks and if i fucked it up they understood because i told them beforehand i was new to mixing drinks. just talk to customers bro
