Shit man, braise some meat in that bitch. Ribs, pot roasts, stews, etc. Brown shit off in a pan, plop it in that thing with some liquid, and have real food in way less time than normal pots or lame crock pots.

are pressure cookers...not..usually..electric?

I never heard of this thing before she gave it to us, but checking amazon etc it's quite clear that there is a tremendous craze surrounding it right now. the items themselves are extremely highly rated and there are tons of youtubes, blogs etc and tons of accessory items on amazon

we don't really eat much meat though, or i'd be throwing ribs in it right away.

It has a sauté mode that will brown food right in the cooker, but it's not as strong as most burners so you have to be careful not to overload it.

Braising is rad because you use wet heat over a long period of cooking time to make tough, cheap cuts of meat good. But it takes fucking forever. With a pressure cooker, you can get this collagen-melting effect fast. Traditional pressure cookers are not electric. They are big, potentially explosive, and a pain in the ass. Home cooks have largely stopped using them (outside of canning) for decades. As far as I know, these electric ones can't brown the meat for flavor, but in every other aspect they're superior to slow cookers. I guess you could do rice with them, too. Probably makes steel cut oatmeal within a few minutes as opposed to 30-60. Seems like a nice gift since it can replace several appliances.

An electric pressure cooker is no less explosive than the old fashioned kind. Like all modern pressure cookers it contains multiple redundant safety measures, just like the stovetop ones.

Standard rule of thumb is that at full pressure (15 psi / 1 atmosphere) a pressure cooker takes 1/3 the time of a normal pot. Beware that some pressure cookers don't go to that high of a setting. Those take longer of course.

Be aware that if you plan on doing any actual canning, or if you need to cook larger foods, then the electric ones are useless.

I fucking love my pressure cooker man. I use all my strength to make sure its locked tight because im paranoid of it blowing up, but it just makes everything so tender in like 45 minutes. Just toss everything in and let it be, its a godsend.

they can brown the meat too, it has a setting that works like a hot plate

shit is pretty badass, and will probably become popular among people on /ck/ especially that have smaller kitchens.

Anon, pressure cookers explode if all of the (rendundant) vents get blocked. It has nothing whatsoever to do with how tight the lid is. Using all your strength to lock the lid is probably counterproductive.

I've got a regular pressure cooker, which is great, but now I really kinda want one of those electric ones. I'm pretty sure it can't do that much more than a regular one, and it will take even more space I don't have, but yeah.. even though I just can't come up with a logical reason to get one, I want one. Which I'm sure I'll regret.

I've got a temperature controlled hotplate with which I could technically do semi-sous vide too. I would love to use it as an excuse, but then I would have to lie to myself. If only it were true sous-vide.
But.. knowing myself I'm probably going to buy one someday anyway. Biggest problem is space atm. That Brevile also looks so sweet, but its price isn't funny anymore.

I have one. Life changing.

Basically don't believe that you brown anything in it, its only 1100 watts so if you're going to do a pot roast, brown the thing on the stove or you'll be standing in front of this for an hour.

That being said, if you're doing a pot roast, do that, put two upsidedown halved onions and some beef broth/wine in - put on manual for like 75 minutes from amazing for tender pot roast.

Risotto - 8 oz arborio rice, 16 oz beef broth - 7 minutes in instapot - quick release
Rice - 3 cups rice, 3 cups broth - 10 mins, natural release.

Pork shoulder - brown on stove with your fav rub, put your fav liquids into the pot - don't need too much, like a cup or 2, and then put fat cap down, and max out the instapot to 240 mins. Thing will be ridiculously tender like you smoked it for 12 hours.

Basically any tough meat braises and breaks down in a 1/4 of the time. Ribs for instance you would do for like 10 minutes, and finish in the oven, short ribs, same idea. This thing makes stuff fall apart if overdone.

Chili is super easy in this too, can just put dry beans in , make sure you have a lot of liquid though as they will soak everything up

Get "the insta pot miracle" - the szechaun chicken and rice recipe is amazing.

Oh perfect soft boiled eggs 2 mins, 3 for medium, 4 medium hard, 5 hard - quick release and ice bath. They peel incredibly easy also.

You can also take it and use as a bomb vessel for marathons.

>I have one. Life changing.
This.
Good post.

Got one for my birthday a couple years ago. Pretty basic stovetop model.
I love it and I used it constantly.
And of course it doubles as a normal pot if you don't pressurise it. As for the "danger": take some time to get to know how it acts on your hob when you first get it. Get a feel for which hotplate setting gets the pressure up without the security valve hissing. Then just use that plus a little common sense in the future. Obviously don't just leave the hotplate at full blast and go take a nap or something.

It's for hands free cooking. I can't manage mutliple burners because I'm a pleb so if I have to cook 2 things I'll cook something in the IP.
What it's great for
Rice
Shredded, moist meat
Steaming corn
Yogurt
What it's not good for
Low temp cooking (like you would expect from a stove, not like a slow cooker)
Making anything crispy

I steamed 12 ears of corn in mine yesterday in 3 minutes. I made decent cheesecake. I cooked a whole chicken that fell of the bone. And if I want to make shredded chicken I cook in the IP because it keeps it so fucking moist and tender you can shred it with you fingers. Cooks in 12 minutes too. The IP is super versatile and if you want to do something just google it and someone has made it in the IP. I promise.

ITT: people who like to eat mush, and save a whole three minutes when they boil an egg.

Here's an alternate approach: throw the instant pot in the trash where it will inevitably end up. Buy a good cast iron pot instead. Learn how to cook. Stop pretending that three minutes is going to change your life. Stop eating mushed-up meats and calling it "pulled." Stop using stupid gadgets. And enjoy all the skills you are now using every day instead of pressing buttons like a fucking pleb.

Probably have microwaves too. Fucking losers.
