They have to be sliced thinly for it to taste good. When an onion is cut, it makes the chemical reaction take place that gives it that sharp bite, so the thinner the onion is sliced the less it'll happen. I've gotten people who say they don't like onions to enjoy raw onion because I slice them as thinly as possible.

I love raw onions, but I always need to remember what kind I'm using.
Some of the fresh ones can get so strong in flavor that it can be overwhelming.

I wouldn't call it spicy since that's not the same thing, but fresh cut onions have a certain "heat" to them I can't exactly describe.
