The Baratza Encore is the de facto entry-level automatic grinder.

I hear they are pretty shit build wise. I've just ordered the Sage/Breville Smart Grinder Pro as it was on a £40 off deal.

If you want a good espresso grind (and an even grind with no large and small grinds) you have to pay the money unfortunately. You might get lucky and get a Rancio Rocky or Baratza Virtuo used. But good grinders are usually held onto and hold their value.

I have that one.
Its really nice, and is fairly cheap.
Anything cheaper you should go with a manual grinder, unless you want chopped irregular coffee bean pieces.

What's your budget? I have a Capresso Infinity. It was $100 but good quality for the price.

De Longhi is one of the best in the market, around only 600.

Nice quads but for espresso it is. The cheapest you will get a machine that can grind an espresso without modification is a Baritza Encore. You can get a cheap De'Longhi for $80 and mod it by turning the grinder ajustment down a couple of revolutions. But both solutions may only last for a while. Read the reviews for the Breville/Sage Smart Grinder Pro. It has an adjustable burr so you can move it downwards to finger grinds if it is not fine enough or wears a bit over time.

If you are a cheapass do this.

That's the shitty little blade grinder I have. For drip coffee like most people are using it for, it's decent enough, I guess, but using it for espresso would be retarded.

You can get even an OK drink from a shitty blade grinder and basic espresso machine. But everything needs to be hot.

Most people use that for spices. Same with the mr coffee next to it. If you're poor and want a good espresso grinder, pic related is your best choice.

Baratza Encore can't do espresso. You may as well be using a pressurized basket if you think it can. Even a Virtuoso would be borderline. Like you'd have to be using a low end machine to pair it with and not care much about results.

its starting to wear out now, but that is after 4 years of constant use

Can I get a rec for an electric Burr grinder for someone that just does a French press every morning? I don't need one to do espresso or anything fancy, just a consistent coarse grind. After ten years of grinding manually every morning I'm finally sick of doing it.

Right now I am trying to find someone to cut the bottom off a spare 51mm sump/portafilter so I can try bottomless with a non-pressurized filter basket. I might be able to get away with just taking out the plastic crap at the bottom but would prefer if I can get the sump modified. I have seen them modified by others. I cannot find a bottomless portafilter for this particular model (Dedica).

It's the UK brand of Breville.

I know. Anyhow it's all setup and ready to go. I'm waiting on a non-pressurized filter basket to arrive before playing with it though. Well I could try it on pressurized but I feel it's not going to make the greatest of difference.

save the money you would spend modding it and save for an actual espresso machine.

Maybe next year. For now I will try with bottomless non-press basket. I tested some grind and fine expresso clogged it on pressurized so I pulled it back from default setting and did not tamp as hard (probably around 15lbs instead of 30lbs). Very nice. The milk wand sucks a bit though.
