Does anyone here have any experience with cooking and/or eating alligator?
What does it taste like?

>> No.10565949

I'm curious about this as well as shark.

Tastes like a rooster fucked a lobster, about that texture too.

>>10565949
Unless you've done something to clean it, it tastes like piss. Skate too. Strong ammonia. Poor butchery practices will make it worse, and Asians encourage it because some of them like that.

I've only ever had alligator tail, and it's not very good.

everywhere I've seen it on a menu it's just fried in some kind of batter.

I've heard shark is pretty tough and gross as well no matter how you cook it; you never see it on any menu and the only place I've actually seen it in a store is foreign markets.

They sell shark at Publix. Makes me more curious.

neither are worth the trouble, I've had both. people just eat it because it's "exotic game" and then never bother eating it again. I've had blacktip and nurse shark a few times because we'd always unintentionally catch them but gator only once.

I'm almost certain I've had shark. It tastes like more metallic fish. Granted it was in a fish taco, and the guy was trying to pass it off as fish, so that might not be indicative of what it's actually like.

was the guy mexican? he probably used an unseasoned cast iron pan,

Gator tastes like slightly "gamey" chicken when cooked correctly and shark is excellent but only when purchased and eaten fresh. I prefer it with lemon and grilled.

My local diner recently sold shark. It just tasted like the fish inside fish sticks. It's not because that diner doesn't know how to cook fish either, their tilapia is top tier.

People usually only eat the tail
They make decent sausage out of it or even boudin in louisiana, or florida, but most just batter and fry it into smallish tidbits and serve like chicken tenders with dipping sauce. It tastes like chicken with a hint of muddy catfish. Some people only taste chicken. I taste fish and not in a good way like turtle meat which is beefy fishy.

what does that even mean, it's not even correct. every fish tastes different there is no such thing as "fishy" taste.

Depends on the store's seafood department. You have to marinate it before eating it though. I usually get Blacktip from Florida.

>> No.10568763

Fried gator tail is on the menu of basically every seafood restaurant in Florida.
The good places will usually do whole gators for special events.

I had tail fried with some kind of sauce and a side of plantains outside of Miami, FL near the Everglades. It tasted a lot like chicken but had this fishy aftertaste that was completely off-putting an very unpleasant, pretty much ruined it. When I say "fried" it wasn't deep fried, then it may have been a bit better, but I had always wanted to try it but after this experience I would not go out of my way to eat it, make it, and would choose chicken over it without thinking twice.

I reveled in that I had just seen a ton of those things crawling around the everglades that I wouldn't have gone near, only to have on on a little tray in front of me, but it got me super sick and ruined the rest of my weekend trip.

I've had alligator, rattlesnake, iguana, turtle. Reptiles don't taste very good, but turtle soup is edible, because the meat is well masked by other flavors.

Shark does in fact taste like fish, but more glutenous in texture. Why people consume whale, outside of starvation, is beyond me.

I was going to say it tastes like rattlesnake, but
>>10567766 describes it better.
It is really chewy, even when young.
The fun part is when you come home to an empty house and someone has left a fresh tail in the the fridge.
They can jump around for a long time.
Well, gotta go, time for my banjo practice.
