my parents and grandparents cannot handle spicy food at all. they never had anything hotter than ketchup when growing up and basically ate food that looked like it was cooked in a WW2 cafeteria. my mom is 70 and she always cuts the cayenne or dried chilies from recopies by 75% or more because she's afraid of "too hot". most older white American people grew up eating food from cans, bland paprika was considered an exotic spice, and ketchup/yellow mustard/mayo/relish was the limit of their condiments.

this has all changed with younger generations, people have more exposure to spicy foods.

I'm Puerto Rican and our food is generally not very spicy, but probably most of the Puerto Ricans who aren't crazy old and live in mostly white neighborhoods can keep up with Mexicans or Indians as far as heat goes. It's just usually more of an occasional thing than a "every meal must be hot" thing. We also like to just let a shitton of peppers sit in bottles of vinegar in the sun to make hot sauce.

I will say, there's a tiny green pepper that I've seen a couple of Mexican families use that I wish I knew the name of. Both times I've had it, it was definitely sweat-and-snot inducing.

This reminds me of a jar of pickled jalepeno slices I got from my grandmother. a relative or friend of hers canned them, can't remember which but it doesn't matter. Cause whoever did it fucked up, and this is important.

See whoever it was either misplaced the sugar in the brine, or just used too much because those jalepenos were sweet as candy. I ate through them like a nigger through chicken, and fuck me if it wasn't some of the tastiest stuff I've ever had. Turns out the jalepeno's natural flavor really goes well with sweetness as well as spice. Not too hot, and sweet as honey.

I'm still pissed I'll never have more of them unless I learn how to pickle and how to fuck up like they did, but on purpose. They were so fucking good
