Farinha in brazil, farofa, is directly translated to "flour" or "meal" but as a topping for food it is cassava, not wheat-based. Cassava (manioc, yuca, tapioca) is all the same thing, really. What is sprinkled on top of particularly meat dishes, adds a bit of nutrition, fiber, satiety, and a slight crunch, much as toasted breadcrumbs would provide. The coarse floured cassava meal is pan toasted in oil or butter, salt, and something else, maybe some garlic. There's a toasty roasty flavor, and a salty buttery crunch. First time I went to Rio, I was like what is that tan stuff to the waiter too...then I met some Brazilians in Miami and got to love it. It's always something better at home, not in restaurants though.
