I was living in Auburn when this happened.

Most businesses dispose of their used grease/oil in containers that are typically supposed to be locked. Some above ground, some not. Often businesses close together share one disposal.

The university transit system and the local municipal trucks use biodeisel as fuel, and that is where they get it from. This ice cream shop is close to some other businesses that also use the "pit".

For some reason the lid was open, and also a 3 year old girl managed to get away from her inattentive parents and made it 600yds all the way to the rear of the business. Take note that this business is about 300ft from a busy 4 lane highway that has a 55mph speed limit and a massive hill that is a blind spot. So it was a Russian Roulette on how the toddler would die, either hit by a car or falling in the pit. Still some of the business' fault too for leaving the lid open.

Actually, this is why the diesel engine was originally developed -- to free farmers from the oil economy, since normal vegetable oils could be used to run very early diesel engines.

Modern ones are more complex and require more sophisticated fuel that's treated and stuff, but the underlying concept is still similar.

Biodiesel is more complicated than that but some restaurants do actually operate little refineries in their basements for extra coin. But now that biodiesel has become less of a meme and more of an actual real reasonable product, it's better to just get the pumpers to come by and sell it off to Shell to be made into Eco V-Power or whatever they call it now.

Burning oil straight off is not only very dirty for the environment, but it's sooty and terrible and will fuck up whatever thing you're burning it in for power. It also doesn't burn very hot, so it's not suitable for things that do use heavy oil but don't really care about soot, like small forges, or things that need hot and clean burning fuel, like grills and heaters and turbines and literally everything else that isn't a memetastic brake drum forge.
