I don't get it like that anymore but as a teen I preferred it that way because it tasted closer to how roast beef and burgers did than other options (and those were 90% of my beef consumption), and I like my meat a tad tougher than most to begin with. The latter point was, I suspect, in part because my parents did a shit job at making me develop my palette as a kid so anything vaguely mushy, slimy, etc. triggered my gag reflex hard - and soft meat was uncomfortably close to that for me.

Nowadays I go for medium though because I realised it tastes good on its own merits, and got used to softer meat.

I don't begrudge people who prefer it otherwise though because, holy shit, how autistic do you have to be to get triggered about how someone likes their steak done?

My mom was raised poor as fucking shit. Six children in the family, grandpa died when she was 2 in an industrial accident, grandma was disabled and had trouble getting around even with her cane at 40. She managed to keep her kids fed most of the time by not eating herself for days on end, and doing whatever odd jobs she could. Mom's single brother would also scour the decently-rural zone with a slingshot for a mix of fun and supplying pigeons that would usually be served with cheap corn gruel, aka plain polenta, a simple tomato sauce was only available if you're real lucky. This leads me to believe any time my mom had the chance to eat meat, it was probably of quality such that if she ate it anything but cooked to leather it may have made her sick and turned her off anything not gray and chewy. I can understand that perfectly. Dad likes a tiny bit of pink in his meat but his upbringing is pretty similar to mom's so I'm guessing it's for similar reasons, he's actually gotten sick from rotten meat as a kid confirmed.

My sister eats hers cooked to a shoe in the same vein she only eats the same handful of things on repeat and half of them are super bland carbs. She's not a horror-story tier picky eater but her attitude to most food that's not pure starch or cheese is a source of contempt, her meat doneness preference in of itself isn't even a factor.

I genuinely like my meat med rare. Dad doesn't give a fuck and if he's grilling he's happy to serve me it as such. I can see terror and fear in my mom's eyes when I cut into it, but since a long while ago she just doesn't look at my plate and let's me be. My sister still has to comment on how gross it is "with all the blood" and how she "completely lost her appetite" upon looking at my plate. I don't give a fuck how you like yours, just don't be a fucking fag. That goes for both my sister and quasi-elitists who scoff at people who eat theirs anything above whatever they so happen to prefer, which is "objectively" optimal.
