where do these shows find these awful places? i've had some bad food but never as bad as on these shows. i think the worst ive ever had was a really wet pizza but it's from a place that's transparently a front for after-hours drinking so it's not like they need to make good food to stay afloat

The way Bar Rescue does it is that the producers will pick a city and start advertising for bars to submit their sob stories. Once they get enough responses, they'll pick three bars, install the "surveillance" cameras and tell them that whoever can put on the best shitshow will get to be on TV.
They'll even plant bad customers and sometimes bad employees to make sure they get good material. I remember there was one bar that had supposedly been taken over an outlaw biker gang, but the biker gang was the production crew.
