Is a slow cooker worth it for me?
I already have a pressure cooker and I just feel that I can do the same stuff with that. I can go high heat and pressurised of course but I can also go low heat with pressure on or off or take the lid off entirely.
If I know how to use the hotplate properly I just don't see what a slowcooker does that a stovetop pressure cooker, or maybe even just a pot, doesn't.

I generally try not to talk about travel with non-travelers in real life. It's annoying to listen to other people's vacation stories and I have no interest in boring others with my own. That being said, if it comes up in conversation, I'm not going to hide that I have an opinion about a place, or an experience on a topic, and there are some types who will show resentment.

I do think the risks are higher in some of those countries, though.
The countries that were specified were;
Colombia, Indonesia, Iran, Thailand, and Mexico.
Thailand is pretty tourist-friendly and certain parts of Mexico are too.
If you want to sit there and argue that you're not at risk simply for being a white tourist in Colombia or those other 98% of Mexico, however, be my guest.
Iran brutalise their own people plenty and don't go that much easier on visitors.

Even back in the 9th grade I knew kids who saved up for traveling with their paper routes or working in grocery stores.
And travel has only been getting cheaper. When I travel I more often than not pay more for the train ticket to the airport than I do for the plane ticket to a city in a different country. If you shop around for a good deal or are even open to hanging around the airport and buying in on a sudden opening on a flight to God-knows-where you can travel for very little money.
As was brought up sarcastically already, the hole-in-wall places will feed you cheaply, but you could also just buy some bread and cheese at a store and make a meal of that instead of insisting on eating in restaurants. No harm in slumming it a little if you're out to have an adventure.
You can get a LOT of travel experience for a thousand dollars if you don't insist on queen-sized beds and lobster dinners.
Hell, stay in a multi-person room at a hostel and get to know people. Don't be such a stuck up pussy.

They are, yes. Even in the batshit craziest areas like Aceh, Indos are generally pretty nice and Indonesia is fairly safe.

I can't speak to Iran as I would be inviting trouble of the government sort due to my work affiliations if I were to visit there, but Colombia and Mexico have their good areas and their bad areas. Most of the US citizens killed in Mexico are Mexican-Americans with some personal connection to the violence in the border areas.

Thailand, ironically, is much more dangerous than its reputation suggests. People think of it as a happy go lucky place because the locals are polite and smile a lot, but if you look at the raw data, it's one of the most dangerous places on earth for Western tourists.

If you know your equipment it should work out just fine. I don't stay up all night to make stock either; I set the stove low enough and have enough water in the pot that I know it won't burn before I get out of bed again.

Add stuff at separate times. Meat and root veggies at the same time at the start. Softer veg at 4-6 hours. Spices in the last hour. If you cook everything the full 8 you lose lots of flavour.

Same principle as stews done normally really. A slow cooker will probably give you more tender meat, but there isn't really any other advantages besides being able to leave it.
I love my slow cooker, but no matter what you do, it's never going to produce meals as good as if you had taken the time to make whatever properly.
