One thing I never understood when I travelled to the US in 1992, was that when you sat down for a meal, in a restaurant, the Americans would always get a large towel-like thing and put it around their neck like a babies bib.
Then they would put a separate cloth over their legs.
This seemed really strange to me, as coming from New Zealand, even as children we were taught to be as close to the table as possible.
