A stew which we only know as 'german stew', which I've recently started making myself. I'm not a /ck/ regular so I don't know how basic/no-brainer this is, but I fucking love it.

In a big ol pot take an onion and a bulb of garlic, chop them up and cook them with about a 1/4 cup of butter. Then throw in and brown 3 lbs of stew beef. After that throw in 2 cups of vinegar and another 2 of cooking sherry (put the heat to a simmer at this point), and 4 cups of beef broth. Add a pound of 'semi-soft german cheese', where I live all I've found to work properly is called "butterkasse", although it can be a pain to find sometimes, its important to get the cheese right, it needs to dissolve into the stew, rather than most cheese which will just get stringy. Then throw a shit ton of spices in there go nuts my list calls for pepper, nutmeg, mace, basil, rosemary, savory, thyme, mint, and marjoram, but you can add or remove from that list as taste/necessity dictates. Let it simmer for an hour. Shred a big old cabbage and throw it all in there and cook for another hour.

Serve it with some good bread, I like sourdough, and it really hits the spot on a chilly day.

My mom was raised by a woman who literally takes leftover lettuce and veggies then blends them with diet coke. They were often not told what they were eating until they cleared their plates and noone left the table until it was all clean for the most part. It seldom tasted good and they didnt have processed food too often.

As a result she has no family recipe outside of various premade things with a touch of salt, pepper, garlic, or onion. Processed foods be it frozen, canned, boxed, or refrigerated are the norm to the point I always ordered the most eccentric thing on the menu and came to learn to cook through Emeril, Iron Chef, and Bizarre Foods. If there's anything really unique to her, it's a brick of velveeta melted with some sort of chili and philly cheese with spices, or potato soup consisting of water, milk, cream, salt, pepper, and potatos. I used to be fat as fuck until i bought my own food and a year or two back she got some serious intestinal issues because of an extreme lack of fiber in her diet, go figure.
