ITT: Childhood misconceptions about food

When I was about 4 I thought beetroot tasted sweet and was fucking great. I went out with a friend's family for his birthday party, ordered something with beetroot as a main ingredient and when it arrived thought it had gone off because it tasted so weird: turns out I'd never had an unpickled beetroot before.

Did you have any misconceptions, /ck/?

Beets are pretty sweet though, I don't know what kind you've been eating to think otherwise.

I grew up loving broccolini, and then had broccoli rabe for the first time at a culinary school restaurant thinking that it was the same thing as broccolini. I seriously thought that the culinary students had completely fucked up.

I don't know what to describe it as but it's definitely not sweet. More like a bland flavour?

They have a pretty distinct sweet earthy taste. They seem to be about 7% sugar naturally.

I was so young that I don't even remember it probably just starting solid foods. I ate a grape tomato thinking it was a strawberry.
I still hate tomatoes to this day

>beetroot
That isn't a word. While we're at it, "rocket" is a kind of propulsion system, not a food. "Cougarette" is a small middle aged woman who preys on younger men. And "aubergine" is a colour, not a vegetable.

Thanks in advance,

English speakers

You mean to say courgette? Do you often transpose characters?

That isn't a word either. Do you often argue with strangers over whether your imaginary friend has red hair or blue hair?

Aubergine is a vegetable AND courgettes = Zuchinnis.

You're dumb lmao

I thought anchovies are vegetables, and brussel sprouts grow like tiny cabbages out of the ground. I believed those things until recently actually.

But we say carrotroot and potatoroot, why not beetroot

I thought cauliflower, broccoli, greeen beans etc have shit taste.
Then I learned how to cook them properly

They're decent raw, but baking cauliflower unlocks its full potential.

beets are a major source for sugar production
