I generally avoid places that have servers for under $40 a plate. They're useless teenagers. Or worse they're adults who never got a better job than being a waiter at a place that hires high schoolers with no experience.
Deli/fast food style counters are better if you're not looking to get pampered in a high end restaurant. My favorite casual restaurant is a local Japanese hibachi place. Order at the counter and wait 10-15 minutes to get back up and grab it yourself. Better food, faster refills and no tips
