It's not about specific skills, it's about work attitude. A regular employee only does his job. A special employee is always looking for things to improve, and to get more responsibilities.
If your job is too make pizzas, you might as well try to make the best pizzas. If your restaurant is pretty busy, you might as well try to do it fast. If a customer is complaining, you can go and deal with him, even if it not your specific job, but becacuse you care about your workplace.
When its time to promote someone, they will look for a employee that has shown that attitude. And even if you don't get promoted, your attitude will translate to whatever other job you get.
