I've tried to make donuts 3 different times now with an iron skillet on the stovetop and every time they come out looking like trash and tasting like oil. What am I doing wrong?

oil isn't hot enough if it tastes like oil
or your oil is super dirty

>deep fat fryer

Do Americans really call them this? Everywhere else in the world they're simply called a "deep fryer".

>> No.10053871

Of course. You just need a deep pot so the oil won't splatter out. Fresh, homemade yeast doughnuts and plain cake doughnuts are the only kind I'll eat anymore,

there is literally no culinary reason you could not make donuts in a 2-3 inch iron skillet
your oil is too cold
your dough is probably fucked and hydration is way off
buy a tub of good oil, buy a fucking thermometer, and find a recipe that isn't the first page on google and please fucking christ measure by weight and not aspie cups

It's called a deep fat fryer because you're frying food deeply in some kind of fat. I don't see why this is such a difficult concept.

I have a deep water fryer at home actually. It's pretty neat for healthy water frying.

Isn't that just boiling?

Nah, I put the thermostat at like 350 degrees rather than boiling which is at 212 degrees. It'll bubble a lot but it's so much better than plain boring boiling.

I don't think it works that way but I'm not a scientist so I can't dispute it.

I live in NY and I've heard them called deep fryers, mostly. There's always regional differences. It's not hard to get, anyway.
