I’ve been told it’s oversalted but otherwise bland. But I’ve yet to try it either.

Its superior to dennys, black bear diner, and ihop. It is about mid tier when compared to all diners.

its just typical chain-restaurant food with a faux-Southern schtick, most of it is bland and designed to be the lowest common denominator to attract overweight Americans without being "scary ethnic food".
it's really nothing special if you have access to actual Soul Food. I do like the gift shops they have in the lobby, i always get rock candy or other uncommon sweets. They were also racist as shit up until like a decade ago and refused to hire blacks, gays or smelly arabs

I like to play checkers then order off their "southern classics" menu

Go and just get the chicken fried steak. It's good and cheap. The little fake ass country store is fun to kill time while you wait for the food. Worth a stop if you're roadtripping by it

Overall pretty good. It’s what I expect from southern food, but it depends on the restaurant how good the food is. I’ve never heard people complain about saltiness or blandness like some of the replies I’m seeing, but then again I’m in the south. It’s more of the oldish style “cornbread, buttermilk, grits, etc” southern food rather than the “deep-fry it and pour cheese on top” southern food. They really try to make it feel as homely as they can.

Country Boy is the best cheap steak meal you can get at a chain restaurant.

Only eat at the ones in the southern states. Further north you get, the shittier the food there is.

I like Cracker Barrel but it's far from that true "home made country food" quality. Their breakfast items are generally good, especially the pancakes. But their biscuits are dry and could be so much better.

Cracker Barrel is a good way to satisfyingly stuff yourself into a very fast sleep. It's my go-to when I'm driving up and down from OH and TX. Eat around 9 and pull off when the sun dips for a couple hours o' snooze then it's back on the road. Shit's like the sleepy version of meth.

I only get the breakfast items, all day serving.
People keep saying mediocre food, but how do you make fried eggs fancy?
You get a huge plate of food for like $6-7, and its all made in house.

>They were also racist as shit up until like a decade ago and refused to hire blacks, gays or smelly arabs
It's a little funny because I remember applying for a job there a while back and on the application it said they won't hire people with unnatural colored hair and/or piercings on places other than the ears. Understandable, since you don't want your workers to look like clowns in a place that's traditionally southern.

This. Whenever I am traveling on the interstate I make it a point to stop at a CB for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

>> No.10029609

Its the most average, forgettable food. You won't like it or hate it.

>> No.10029728

They have a large variety of offerings which is probably the best part. I've never had bad food there, but a lot of items are a bit sub par. My biggest complaint would be the portions seem to change every time I went. I no longer go there because they started hiring colored hair freaks and queers. The fat lady at the counter would also repeat my tip amount back loudly, like she was judging me, which pissed me off too.

>> No.10029742

It's really not bad, I'd say it's better than Applebee's, Chili's etc and for cheaper.
I had some pancakes last time, and I was blown away.

>> No.10029910

Their breakfast is phenominal imo. Can't speak for dinner, but it seems like people aren't a fan itt

>> No.10029947

>>10029453

A lot of chain restaurants and fast food places are pretty mediocre. That doesn't mean the food isn't fancy enough, it just means it's nothing super special or anything really worth going out of your way for. I've never had bad food from Cracker Barrel but I've also never been impressed or ever had a "I really want Cracker Barrel" moment.

And the food never tasted homemade to me. I remember things tasting pretty bland last time I went but it's good enough if you want breakfast at anytime of the day.

I've also noticed that it's super popular with old people at least around where I live.

>> No.10029950

Cracker Barrel is good food on the interstate but Iron Skillet is much better. Iron Skillet is a restaurant at truck stops and it's dank as fuck. The chicken fried steak dinner is like $10 but for only one extra dollar they'll give you a whole extra chicken fried steak

For the classic rural American big breakfast they do a good job, and will serve it to you any time of day. The rest of the menu is foodservice renditions of 20th Century diner food. The menu is noteworthy because it has a bunch of home cooking classics like chicken fried steak, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, fried chicken and the like, which fits the antique Americana conceit of the place.
