>Watch food wishes and get inspired to make something
>Recipe is in imperial units
>No worries, just open a calculator to figure out what the hell I'm doing
>Look at the actual amount of flour I got in the bowl and realize it can't be right
>turns out ounces can refer to both a volume and a weight

how do my fellow nonburgers cope with this shit

>> No.10016069

To clarify:

An ounce is a measure of weight equaling 1/16 of a pound.

A FLUID ounce is a measure of volume equaling the volume of one ounce of water.

There are 8 fluid ounces in a cup.

>> No.10016081

Measurements are almost always by volume unless stated otherwise.

>> No.10016252

Metric fags are literally this retarded.
Water is the constant standard, just like in metric.

Know how 1 mL of water weighs one gram?

1 fl oz of water weighs 1 oz

>he used a scale to weigh fucking flour

Lmao the absolute state of eurofags

1 fl oz of other liquids do not weigh 1 oz. This is also the case in metric, but metric doesn't name units retarded things like "1 fluid gram."

>> No.10016488

Imperial is retarded even for cooking which is supposedly one of the system's advantages. Its pretty messed up to come up with ratios for ingredients, or its waaaay easier with grams.

If you don't understand the measuring units, find a recipe for the same dish in which you do.

I'm a brainlet and that's what I do.

>> No.10016531

Nobody ever measures flour in fluid ounces, what the fuck?

iktf OP just amerifats are still using this subhuman imperial system these days, it doesn't make sense for anyone and they're just too stubborn to change it.

this mental gymnastics, jesus christ no wonder burgers are a joke. Just use metrics like the entire world.

If you want to use our recipes, use our units you fucking idiot. How is this so complicated? I convert between metric and imperial and vice versa all the time for work and it's no big deal.

NASA use the metric system, retard.

Unless you’re baking, you don’t need to measure very precisely as long as you don’t put too much of anything except if stated.

So if we can use both units to land on the moon, why can't OP make cookies?

>> No.10016637

Here's the thing OP. Measurements for cooking are almost always volumetric. A cup of flour 8 fluid ounces in volume. So if the recipe says "1 cup and 6 ounces of flour" that's 1 and 3/4 cups of flour. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out from there. You can easily eyeball fractions of cups like 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and whatnot.

OP doesn’t have ex-Nazi scientists checking his math.

But then why not say it so?
1 and 3/4 of cups of flour, instead of that stupid 1 cup and 6 ounces of flour.
Nobody in Euroland says something like

I would be happy to use metric if the units of measurement were practical.

"measure 1 cup" sounds a hell of a lot better than "measure exactly 245 grams"
