Anyone here planning out their Spring ‘19 garden?
Anything growing indoors?
Questions for other people?

I live in the city and used to travel a lot so I couldn’t hold down a proper garden. I want to definitely get some herbs gowing. I was thinking basil and parsley for sure. Anything else that’s pretty common?

I've got plans in motion. I've started seeds for 6 kinds of tomatoes and 12 kinds of peppers. I also have chives, rosemary, cilantro, and curly parsley. Currently indoors, of course but will be moving outdoors once the weather permits.

I also have a fig, peach, and pear trees.

You must have a nice bit of land.
I have a strip about 2’x10 feet. Lots of sun at least.
I don’t think I can even name 12 kinds of peppers. Growing up we had a pear tree and would make pear wine.

Nice, any favorite dishes to make with your herbs?

Hopefully the chinese spinach (leaf amaranth) does better in the heat than my greens last year. Also basil, beans, and nasturtium (for looks as well as eats). Very excited to get outside again. Winter feels like an eternity.

Little early for tomatoes, ain't it?
>>11831155
I've got 2 trays of eggplant and peppers (jalapenos, Chinese 5 color, Cayenne, chipotle, and birds eye). Gonna get a few tomatoes started next month along with spring veggies and who knows what else.
Mainly growing for myself and enough starters for family.

Green onion is pretty easy to grow as well. You can even grow it indoors. Maybe garlic? Depends on what you think you might use.

Does your city offer allotments? They're normally very cheap, but can be oversubscribed. I was lucky to find out that my city offers some good allotments nearby that are hopefully not oversubscribed this year when I attempt to get on the waitlist. I have a few herbs that I brought indoors for winter (chives, oregana, sage, rosemary and thyme). They have no greenery left on them any more, apart from the chives, which have just started new shoots this past week. I'm hoping that they will all start grow back in the spring when I get them outside again, since they are all perenial.

Carrots, spinach, strawberries and of course herbs.

You could also grow potatoes in a bag. They're pretty easy, but do require you to store a bag of compost. Use it to get some interesting variety of potatoes that you wouldn't normally find in a grocery store.

I live pretty close to the equator. I just started the seeds, they haven't even germinated yet. The plants will be kept indoors until the temp is right to move them outside.

I started germinating some of the peppers on the 13th and the others on the 20th. So far most of them have germinated and some of them are getting their first set of real leaves. I'm still waiting on two varieties to germinate though (Naga Morich and Aji Charapita). I've got my doubts on the nagas, they are older seeds and I hear those are hard to germinate in general.

I'm going to attempt to grow pumkins this year in containers. I don't have a lot of space, so I think one plant per container could allow me to move them into the best sun. I am prepared to build scaffolding and slings to train the vines upwards. From what I've read about powdery mildew, this might actually be an advantageous strategy for keeping the leaves dry. I bet I can lay down salt circles under the planters to deter slugs.

I'm gonna start a herb garden this year and maybe try to grow a vegetable. I've already got a bunch of garlic planted and its growing ok.
My mom gave me a load of heritage seeds from her garden along with growing instructions as a Christmas present so I'll see what happens.

This is the best alternative if you don't have a garden.

>>11835758
Why pumpkins? You're better off growing zucchini if you have limited space but still want some kind of squash.

>>11836292
Believe it or not, tomatoes are surprisingly easy to grow and very productive. Just buy potted seedlings and bury them until only the top few leaves are above ground. Tomato plants are wacky in that they can put out additional roots from any part of the stem that gets buried. Doing so ensures a robust root system and a healthy plant.

>>11838883
Cherry tomatoes. You just soak the shit out of them every 5 days or so and don't water them the rest of the time.

Im similar to you OP, got some shade cloth over half a concrete rectangle out the back of my apartment and about 8 terracotta planters for veg and herbs. Rest of the garden is cacti and carnivorous plants. I definitely recommend setting up some basic reticulation if you're away for weeks on end or cop 30-40 degree days in summer. A water timer that slaps onto the tap and some tubing with spinklers ran me about $50 total.

Currently only growing what I tend to cook with;
Tomatoes, variety of chilis, peppers, pickling cucumbers (although they keep dying after one season of fruiting, cant anyone explain, they grow 10x faster than anything in the garden then die regardless of water, PH or fertilization). Also got parsley, basil, garlic, chives, lemongrass and rosemary going.
