Alot of people like to say that NYC is the mecca of food in the U.S., but after living here my whole life I have to say that some incredibly popular foods ubiquitous in the United States are practically unheard of here.
I've been getting a lot into barbeque and I'm not even gonna talk about the pathetic BBQ "restaurant" scene, It's a fucking journey just to find cuts to smoke.
>go to costco
>no whole packer briskets, just a couple small flats

>go to a butcher
>"a whole brisket? lol that'll $15/lb"

>mention brisket to anyone and they automatically assume you're making pastrami

>go to another butcher
>ask for St. Louis cut spare ribs
>they have no idea what I'm talking about
>"wanna try this $39.99/lb grass fed antibiotic and hormone free filet mignon though?"

>"tri-tip???"

only people who live in NYC say this to lessen the fact they are stuck in NYC

Yes! We have great Italian food, but everything else is honestly done better elsewhere in this country. When it comes to certain stuff, like BBQ and Mexican, NYC is legitimately some of the worst I've had in this country.

Yanks have this bizarre stockholm syndrome to their city where they have to convince themselves it has the best of everything, anywhere, for all time.

I travel a lot for my job, believe me major cities while have many options often lack a lot of good quality. Some of the best food I've had are in no name cities in the middle of no where usa.

I don't think we have the best food, we just have a lot of it.

>brisket is way overpriced
>everyone assumes i'm making pastrami

the reason for both of these is the same.

NYC has great regional stuff like Italian and Jew food. But I can't even make some stuff at home in this city because apparently cuts that any Costco 50 miles away in PA has is yet to reach this place. I can buy tomatoes and basil anywhere in Texas. I can buy chick peas and potato anywhere in California. But apparently I can't just buy a Brisket in NYC.

The only good experience buying meat in this city is my local grocery store that has actual CAB Ribeye for like $13/lb.

Some of the best food I've had was over a weekend in bumfuck Arkansas.

The flyover meme truly is stupid.

Brooklynite here, NYC definitely has a world-tier food scene, but it's not cheap. You'll find some of the best restaurants on Earth in the LES, but it definitely costs a pretty penny.

And I have some extremely competent butchers over in Bushwick (Foster Sundry), but the beef for sure costs an arm and a leg.

Maybe go check out Flushing and Bed-Stuy? You'll find some amazing Asian and soul food respectively for decently cheap.

Like I said, for some things. I've had better seafood in New England the the Gulf.
I've had better Asian food on the west coast.

>Butchers
I have a (non-yuppie) butcher that has great beef, not necessarily the cuts I'm craving for (BRISKET), I can definitely get a beautifully marbled USDA Prime Ribeye, its not cheap, but at least I don't have to pay for "grass fed" or have someone try to sell me craft beer.

> Asian and soul food
I've lived in this city my whole life, I'd like to think I've eaten a lot of what it has to offer. My issue is the incredibly common stuff that seems to be unrealistically expensive or practically nonexistent.
