Mine has been super hit or miss. In the Marines it was typically glorified MREs that tasted like nothing, and in the Army it's been okay to tasty but low quantities. Sometimes I wish I'd just get an MRE and call it a day.

Funnily in the Marines it was common to only have MREs with maybe one hot meal a week in the field, but the Army if soldiers didn't get their two hot meals a day it was a constant bitch fest.

like why not open all the tins of flour together and then dump em into the mix? or why not pull the leaves off of all the celery stalks and then proceed to chop them so that you dont waste time transitioning between the different tasks numerous times?

Army mess halls only have about $1.50 for breakfast, $2,00 for lunch, and $2.50 for dinner per soldier to work with. each individual one on each base gets budgeted based on number of people that usually get.

one of the mess halls at my first base, did something great for a while. a new civilian manger put in display fridges like at a convenience store. then stocked them with canned drinks, cold lunch meat foot long sandwiches, and bags of chips. You could just walk in, scan the meal card; and then grab a drink, sandwich, and chips. which meant you could spend most of your hour and a half lunch break doing something else. that lasted about 3 months. when the base command saw how much his cost overruns were. they fired him and stopped the take away stuff. which meant you wanted it to go, you had to stand in line and get normal food in a polystyrene box. no drinks to go.

mess halls only still exist because the military still insist in housing enlisted soldiers that aren't married or have enough rank, in barracks. which most of them have no kitchens. if they do. it is a shared kitchen for an entire floor or entire building. which is just a pain in the fucking ass to use. so instead of getting Basic Allowance for Subsistence. soldiers in barracks get a meal card. forcing them to eat in mess halls or pay out of pocket. while married soldiers and soldiers not in barracks get a few extra hundred dollars tax free per month to buy food.

eating in mess halls really dominates your schedule too. since it takes up so much time. what would be a 5 minute breakfast in your own home. takes 45 minutes at a mess hall. drive to the mess hall because they don't have enough to make them all walking distance from barracks. stand in line to scan your meal card. stand in line to get your food. put stuff at a table. then get your drinks, silverware, napkins, cold/dry food items like fruit and cereal. sit and eat. take your stuff to the turn in point.

oh and mess halls usually close at 7pm or even earlier. so you have to get dinner between 5 and 630pm. which can be a problem when your normal release for work for the day is 5pm and dickhead commanders or first sgts will keep you late. don't you dare mention that you need to go eat. they'll either make you go get something to go and come back and eat it in a minute while watching. give you an MRE. or tell you tough shit. though you might luck out and have decent ncos in your squad. who will buy pizza or something for the squad every once in the while.

some mess halls don't do all 3 meals. some won't be open on weekends. some on the weekends only do 2 meals and breakfast is still ass early in the morning for some reason.

i've never had even decent coffee from a mess hall. the 5 year old packet of freeze dried instant coffee in an MRE is better coffee than what I got in mess halls.

the soft serve ice cream machine is always broken.

I'd tell anyone in school today to join the 'softer' arms like Navy or Air Force.

Instead of geting into a mountain of debt getting a near useless degree you earn heaps, save a mountain of it (while still splurging). Get fit and earn real experience.

I walked into a management position and earn more than any of my friends for being 26.
Workplaces trip over their boners to hire anyone with forces experience and a modicum of professionalism.
This is all bongland based though. Surely it can't be too different elsewhere?

I'd say go for it. I was a reserve Chef and you could attach to basically any unit of exercise so you see a wide range of scenarios and capbadges. They had a lot of civvy chefs join for the same reason you mentioned.

Just be aware you'll probably be sharing your first chef training course with mongs and you'll be shown basic shit all over again. But at the same time, half the course is practical cooking in the field which is fun in itsself.

I'm 27 and my current regret in life is that I went to college instead of the military. Tons of debt and barely more employable. If I went in the military first, they would have paid for college and being a veteran is a huge boost to your resume.

>> No.9926009

i also regret going to college, but if i went into the military i don't think i'd bother with college.

the undergrad maybe i don't regret so much, but going into a phd program was the most retarded choice of my life. i could have done OCS after the undergrad and would have still benefited from the degree. if i go in now it's as if i pissed away 5 years because the military doesn't give a shit about doctorates unless it's law or medicine.

>> No.9926072

>>9926048
the thing about getting a phd is that everyone's experience, even two people in the same lab starting at the same time, will vary considerably because the whole point is to work on a unique project and there's far less structure than in undergrad.

the biggest problem is that you're the closest you can legally be to a slave. your adviser rules over you for the 5 or so years it takes you to finish. you can virtually do nothing without his approval, so if you get a shit adviser, as i did, you end up in 5 years of suck. worse so, the offer i got for a job right now only pays 79k/year. so i pissed away 5 years of my 20s that i'll never get back, making less than a burger flipper while working more hours, and in the end it got me a salary that i could have reached, and maybe even exceeded, by working in the industry and earning a real wage for 5 years since my undergrad was in engineering.

However down the line your earning potential will keep going up where as someone with a BA caps somewhere before you.

>> No.9926128

>>9926094
that would be true if i were able to get into either consulting or finance. consulting may happen if i take the offer i was given as it involves working with natural gas, but if i take that offer getting into finance flies out the window.

79k/year when you're a couple years from 30 is not impressive by any stretch since nowadays kids straight out of undergrad get offers that match or even exceed that. a low starting offer also makes it more difficult to get a higher offer down the line. recruiters generally have a good idea what each company pays on average even if you lie about what you were getting paid.

The cold bar had fruit, fruit salds, muffins sometimes, coffee was good and there was separate milk and chocolate milk dispensers, which was awesome.

Lunch and dinner ranged from good to great, with steak Fridays still a thing at that base, which was surprising.

On the other hand, I did another course at a small unit's regiment (no mess in Northern Ontario lel) so it was catered everyday by a private company (Chartwells). Shit food from day one. The only great food we had was burritos, but it was in the field so we couldn't even enjoy them that much...
