500 hundred hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Think about that. It’s simple economics. Advertisers don’t have an unlimited marketing budget, but the supply of video is infinite. If YouTube monetized every video equally it would devalue the ad space to the point that YouTube wouldn’t make anything selling it, so they artificially restrict the supply of videos advertisers can buy. The gold rush is over.

I do it sometimes but I agree it's not that entertaining. Really what makes it or breaks it is the streamer, if they're funny/amusing, not so much the game they're playing. But rarely do I just sit there and stare at it. I might play it in the background as I fold clothes or eat lunch.

But I've noticed kids (born after 2000 or so [actually there's probably a lot of them on 4chan now]) watch the most pointless shit on the internet in general. Videos with absolutely no substance and minimal entertainment value. They can sit there and just watch the shit for hours like it's TV.

I wonder if a lot of people stopped watching stuff on YT like I did because of how often that happened. I'd start watching a video and realize it was one of those videos made just for ad revenue and close it. Can't speak for everybody but here are my reasons.
>These people are very good at what they do.
I don't watch streamers who are lower than the top 1% of any game. If you cannot play the game at a professional level I do not watch you. I like seeing cool shit that they do and sometimes I even learn something so that if I play I can get better. I don't have the drive, talent or motivation to git gud. Watching tournaments is also acceptable.
>they are entertaining
The streamers I watch have chill laid back personalities and I don't think they are boring. I don't watch yellers or people who try and start drama. The whole e-celeb/IRL stream stuff is stupid. Even if they play the same game over and over again they still find ways to keep shit interesting.
>its low commitment and low stress
I can watch and leave anytime I want. it also serves as good background noise if i need it. I also know what i'm going to get when I watch a particular streamer so there is some comfort there. I don't want to gather people to play with if its a multiplayer game.
>chat

Pre-internet days, there was no shortage of of people who wanted to watch video games. If you'd ever been to the arcade, that one dude who was absolutely demolishing game xyz had a crowd of people around watching him - and remember that this is just a localized event not available to a wide audience!

Hell, I enjoyed watching my friends play games when I'd go over to their house. A lot of times, it's faster, easier, and a lower investment to watch someone who already knows what the fuck is going on in a game, rather than pick it up yourself, realize you suck at it, dump time and money into it, and get no enjoyment out of it. Especially now that I'm an adult, I just don't have the time for every latest game that comes out, but I still enjoy and am facinated by new games, and I like to get a slice of them every now and then. Watching other people who have the time or inclination to play these time wasters, SAVES ME A SHIT TON OF TIME AND MONEY to get roughly the same amount of enjoyment I would have gotten from playing myself, without all the hassle.

All that being said, I still have no clue why people donate money, I certainly never have.

Most people here are saying its dependant on the streamer to make it entertaining. I doubt many people would watch gameplay footage with no streamer/commentary. There's a social engagement aspect to it. Saying its the same as someone watching a football game is pretty dumb.

Also I'll never play in the NFL, anyone can play whatever game in question any time.

would people watch a football game without a streamer/commentary?
>anyone can play whatever game in question any time.
thats not the issue. most people are capable of playing football but very few will make it to the NFL. the same can be said for videogames. inb4 you just have to try harder.

People watch sports without commentary all the time unless you really want to equivocate play by play calling to playing Minecraft for three hours and having "funny" comments.

Comparing video game streamers to professional sports is just stupid. It seems closer to podcasts or MST3K orsomething . People should do whatever they want though.

>Comparing video game streamers to professional sports
not a fair comparison. if a professional sports player did a vlog while doing their respective sport than that will be more analogous to actual streamers.

>WE'RE BEING SHUT DOWN!!
No, they're just no longer be paid ad money. They can still continue to make videos and get hundreds of dollars worth of free Youtube storage, except they just won't get paid anymore.

Reminds me of a scene in the movie Signs
>Who wrote this book?
>A scientist who had been persecuted for their beliefs.
>That means they're unemployed.
Same shit applies here. They'll come up with a million reasons and conspiracies on why Youtube is "censoring" them or is out to get them, all the while they refuse to accept the reality of the situation.
Good luck applying for a job with a huge gap containing "Youtube Content Creator."
Honestly, what the fuck were so many of these Youtube channels thinking? Making videos for a living isn't stable in the least bit.
Hilarious how their subscriber yes-men always jump to their defense by saying shit like "Y-youtube is d-destroying itself!" when Youtube is actually growing bigger than ever.

Anyways, their tears are delicious.

Some of these guys get so pissed in their comments when people mention that they're using adblock.
One /k/ related channel got so angry over it that he started pinning comments mentioning how using adblock is taking away his "hard earned" income and taking food out his daughter's mouth.

10 years ago I remember this happening on Google search results where every algorithm update you would see hundreds of people's income sources go away. Now its happening with YouTube also.. This is what happens when a giant powerful platform is build on the backs of naive and innocent people trying to make a living.

Proctor & Gamble has been reducing it's youtube ad budget because they found it to be largely unproductive. They pulled all ads a couple years ago because they were put together with ISIS, taliban, and neo-nazi crap. When they checked, they found no reduction of sales revenues because of it. They have since returned to a certain extent, but it's much more closely monitered and targeted, and they spend much less money than before. Overall ,it's been found that youtube isn't the wonderful ad space they thought it was. Just a bunch of NEETS and GEEKS in their mama's basement.

If you're watching a speedrun or TAS, it's always fun to see the game get utterly broken in a way you could never imagine. They also talk in depth about how the game works and other entertaining tidbits. It's far more indepth than lets plays.

It would be like watching a guy in an eating contest who eats specific chemicals together that disintegrate food in his stomach so he can eat more, without it being considered steroids. just a fun thing to see.

Good. YT is full of shit with misleading clickbait images and 30-second videos with 15 minutes of padding.

I'm not even a massive YT fan but yesterday I looked up a clip of Chinese tourists acting like fucking chimps at a seafood buffet and was presented a 17 minute video by two Wongs analysing the clip. The clip itself was maybe 25 seconds.

I also clicked on a headline that said 'fight leads to assault with a deadly weapon', guess what? The ADW was just a nigger flashing a pistol in their waistband when confronted by an angry garage owner with a jack-handle. Like, what the fuck?

Just like on /ck/, 90-95% of food-related posts on YT are spam, filler, shitposting or just plain fat useless cunts padding out the space between ramming down junk food and breathing heavily from the effort.

Yeah, it's mostly watching people playing shit depending on how amusing you find them.

Some streamers do some unique things. Criken had some modded Left4Dead speedrun for his pals which involved viewers 'purchasing' monsters for him to spawn to grief them which was pretty fun.
