A Filipino grocery store opened up in the area, but I know nothing about the region. Apparently they even sell ready cooked food. Is there anything that would make it worth the trip? Any interesting regional ingredients? What should I order if I go there? How does /ck/ feel about Filipino food?

The only good thing about filipino food is their spanish bread. Think how vietnam has baller french coffee and baguettes, the Philippines has awesome baked stuff. Except vietnamee cuisine is delicious plus french skills, filipino food is garbage oily overcooked organ meat and chicken fetuses.

Spanish cheese bread and putok are good. Sweet breads but yummy as a dessert.

Ube ice cream sold at western grocery stores (flip or chingchong doesn't matter) is like, sub-bluebell-tier crap, with purple food and carageenan. I think the only reason it's gotten so popular is it seems "exotic". If people weren't such plebs and could actually use their taste buds instead of throwing judgment out the window any time they taste a foreign food they'd understand they were being taken for rubes

There are a few cities in America where you can get good ube ice cream but for the most part nobody outside the Philippines has ever had it

When I was in the Philippines I ate a lot of fried fish (especially "bangus") and fried squid ("pusit"). And lots of sinigang soup with the tamarind flavor. And also those halo-halo bowls from Chowking. I enjoyed the food. I liked how all those little restaurants would start putting whole cooked fish in the display counters at lunchtime, and you could just buy a couple of them with some rice and start eating immediately with no wait.

>> No.9893781

>>9893761
What are you trying to say? Siopao, pancit (if you mean pancit bihon which is what most murkins think of if you say pancit) and lumpia are chinese food with a slight flip accent. Adobo sucks, and roasted fish is something every culture has. Kare kare I can take it or leave it. Sisig though is one of the best dishes in flip cuisine. Are you saying he's right because sisig is not a good example of flip food?

Native food is decent. Pretty good for its cheap price and considering the quality of ingredients here.

Any "western" food here is absolute dog shit. Laughable quality but also pretty cheap so it's alright I guess. At least they have a McDonald's over here.

I'd never go out of my way to make flip food though.

>> No.9893789

>>9893784
Whitewashed flip here again. The thing about flip food if you live in the west is that it's pretty dogshit. Like good luck making anything good with Heinz distilled white vinegar and like, 3 year old stale ground powdered tamanrind and so on.

It's gotten better in recent years with the internet and asian markets becoming more sophisticated, but unless you are quite young, have very recent immigrant parents, and live in an area with a lot of flips, if you're a murkin flip you probably grew up eating terrible renditions of traditional dishes, and you would have good reason to despise flip cuisine.

I'm a fresh off the boat flip and i haven't craved much for filipino food since I got here. Been in the US for two years now. Sisig, crispy pata, and bulalo are the only good stuff imo. I grew up poor and usually had dried fish, dried squid, adobo, bangus, paksiw... basically the traditional filipino food thats super fucking salty to make it so you eat more rice. I don't like a lot of filipino food because they usually smell bad. My parents like to use fish sauce on things that don't even require fish sauce, like soup. Even if I've lived with it for several years doesn't mean I'll ever get used to how awful it is

Bicol Express (pork or chicken cooked in a coconut sauce) is great. Sinigang is a tamarind base soup that pairs well with salmon or shrimp. If they have fried bangus (milkfish), try that, too. Lumpia is basically eggrolls, but a mixture of lettuce and ground beef.

Also I like these longaniza sausages, but apparently Mexican chorizo are pretty much the same thing.

>>9893852
>things that don't even require fish sauce, like soup
Eh, I think that's pretty common across SEA food. You're right about the general saltiness, though. As much as I love Filipino food, so much of it is salty or greasy.

Here most people are helpful and friendly. They don't want to kill you if you somehow insult their pride. It's third world and there's a lot of annoying things due to that but if you aren't broke you could live here barely aware of the crippling poverty that surrounds you. Detroit and Chicago go a fuck of a lot harder than any single place on the island of Luzon. There is a crime problem but it's probably not as bad as the one in your own country. Common sense is enough to avoid becoming a victim most of the time. There's a reason Filipinos wear their backpacks on their stomachs.

Killing people over drug related crimes is quite common in Asia. They're not usually executed without a trial etc like here but there's a lot of legal red tape in the way in this country. I wouldn't defend it but there was popular demand for it. Problem is most of the people who were killed were low level people selling to support their habit. The big fish never fried.

But as much as this shit dominates the media you wouldn't know anything about it if you came here and didn't pay attention. Unless you are the kind of retard who comes to Asia and goes out looking for drugs.

Fresh good ingredients are paramount, you've never had visayan kilala till you've had it with freshly made gata. Much of Luzon doesn't know how to cook either, barring a few exceptions like bicol.

Food culture is shit though, shitty palate only satisfied with fat/salt bombs and sweet shit. People forgot how to cook. This is the main reason for the shitty image the cuisine has.

At its best the cuisine has some interesting stuff to offer, bold flavors, original ingredients, a couple of good techniques, not that shitty compared to the rest of the world. You'd have to be in the philippines and have a competent cook to try it though, so all in all not worth the effort.
