Black guy here. It's from a history of being poor and disrespected. My race just outright does not respect institutions we see as "white" (don't mean to politicize it too much, but that's really the essence of it); we see respect for these institutions as diminishing to our selves. See, most aspects of the service industry were just not available to blacks in America for the hundred years after we were freed when our modern communities began to form, so we react adversarially. Same reason black descendants of slaves do shitty in school, while willing immigrants from Africa do just fine.

It's difficult for me to explain to some of my more ignorant relatives that fitting in and paying the honky with the pizza a few extra bucks isn't necessarily forfeiting your self. It's just how you be "nice" in the United States of fucking America. Where we live. So be nice for fuck's sake. If you do agree then why would you say black people frequently vote for the ones who have wanted to keep them enslaved (i.e. the political left)?

I am curious what other institutions black people would deem “white” and thus view the same way? How do black people view Chinese food delivery? Do they tip for that? Surely that isn’t classified as “white”. What about catering?

No, I don't agree with it. I'm just saying people in general make poor decisions because people choose to self-identify and qualify their self-identity in strange ways. And I hate to say it, but in the minds of many of my negro brothers, it is not a very complex dynamic. Tipping = less for me and more for someone I don't know. I was simply trying to explain the root of that. Black people are not used to "service with a smile". We (generally) do not see its value.

>keep them enslaved (i.e. the political left)?

Not OP but a driver as well

It’s all right. Spend most of the time in the car listening to music. Consider investing in a box to put pizzas in cuz your car will smell like it after the first day.

As you won’t only be delivering pizza, you’ll probably be asked to help out with stuff in the kitchen. Prepping dough, washing dishes, or if you’re trained for it, taking orders from the phone or the front

Depends on your store for gas compensation. My store is about a dollar per delivery so that usually covers most of it since our delivery radius isn’t that far.

Depends on the customers. Indian fucks don’t tip for shit. Hell, even mexicans tip better than them. High school kids don’t either, but that’s to be expected. If you deliver to businesses they tend to tip a lot. Not schools though. Delivered twenty pizzas to one in one order and got five bucks for it. Teachers wages, go figure.

I was a golf caddy in high school and college. Getting tipped, even a small amount, wasn't about the money: it was about feeling like you did a good job, like the person you're giving the service to appreciated it.

Apparently more than a copy of 'At Your Service', any management book, or common-sense education.

In a typical sit-down restaurant your food cost is probably between 30-40% depending on the class of the place. You need to start adding at LEAST 10-15% for labor, the cost of cleaning and sanitation products, the cost of industrial-equipment, the cost of having professionals clean the vents twice a year (not the baffles that you should clean yourself), electricity water gas etc, refrigerant agents that need filling by a professional twice a year, chairs napkins tables and their repair or replacement.

What the fuck are you doing?
Also, delivery fees only apply to deliveries. It would be absurd to have two different prices. If anything, a law should be passed to REQUIRE delivery fees to be paid to the driver and not just a caveat form of profiting.

Thirdly, drivers might prefer cash-at-door tips so they don't have to wait for their next paycheck to spend it.

Accusing a progressive person of this is outright hilarious. I also work pizza and there are multiple reasons why it takes longer than you'd expect to deliver your pizza even though your only 5 mins away.

1) all the drivers are busy and are out delivering. There's no one to deliver your food

2) Manager tells you to wait even though your food is ready and you live nearby. They will usually tell you to take two or three if the other deliveries are on the same route. So that adds about 10-15 minutes waiting for the other orders to be done coooking

3) This kind of goes with point 2 but there are people who do specified timed orders. These get priority obviously and if they happen to be ready around your order then tough luck. I have to drive all the way downtown to deliver it before I get yours done.

4) The newbies take your order and they're always forgetting items so they gotta go back to grab it and or get lost in apartment complexes if you happen to live in one.

6) Fucking traffic. A red light can add up to 2 minutes or even more of dead time just waiting. Also slow drivers, a lot of them

serious question for delivery guys: everytime I order food, I tip. My usual guideline is rounding up to the next € + 1€ additionally if I'm ordering for myself, or 3-4€ if we're many people ordering. I don't know if it's considered small or big in the states but over here I've seen many drivers smiling and thanking me whenever I've done it, so I've sticked to it.
My question is: do they keep track of who tips and who doesn't? I'm mainly asking because I've noticed a change in the delivery time for a couple of shops I've been ordering twice a month or so: they used to take 45+ minutes to get here, but lately after 15 minutes they're at my door. It's a couple of places too, and it even happened during holiday season, so I don't think it has to do with having less deliveries to do.

Don't get me wrong it looks like hell to be on oven when its like that, but when you're literally only cutting what gets put in front of you and don't have to look at or do much else its very easy to get them cut stupid fast. It also looks like they give good space so its not as bad, and there's bumpers on all of the ovens so if you fall behind for a few pizzas aren't hitting the floor immediately.

Large specialties are about $25 a pop and every topping is $2. Salads are $12 and most fried items are $7 with wings at $10. I've seen people modify specialties into $60 monstrosities.

Tipping is a cop out for business owners to pay less to their waitstaff and keep their food prices lower while making the customer pay the staff’s wages. Yes, good prices would go up if waitstaff were paid regular wages without tips. In the south and many other areas, waitstaff are paid only ~$2.50 per hour and expected to make up the rest of their MINIMUM wage in tips. I think that’s wrong and it destroys the purpose of tipping. It makes the customer feel guilty and obligated instead of happy to tip as a thank you for good service.

There are lots of people who bust ass in other service jobs that aren’t tipped and they live.

And they aren't paid by the hour or whatever--they're salaried. They get so much per year, and it's divided out by however many pay periods their district does.

I delivered through highschool and college - I miss it honestly. It was a lot of fun to get stoned and drive around the small town my store covered, had some regulars and always got any dinner item I wanted at the end of my shift. It might save the employer some money. That's about it. Personally, I think it's a poor idea to gamble away your time like that. And it is gambling. You hope someone tips you well, because you know you agreed to have your employer pay you fucking nothing per hour, and when the customer doesn't tip or not as well as you'd like, you take it out on the customer.

Tipping for food service is a practice I oppose. If you want to get paid more, take it up with the employer, not me.

>>9888283
>You'd pay more for the food
More likely than not, the employer would just hire fewer people. Either that or they'd hire more people, but each would get fewer hours. What cost has tipping actually been shown to cover?

If the cost of the food went up substantially, wouldn't the restaurant lose out to more affordable competitors?

That's incredibly wrong. In my area at least, teaching just requires a certification on top of your bachelor's degree, not any extra years of schooling. Many of my friends in college did their teaching certification while getting their degree and they didn't require even a single extra semester. Where do you like that you require even a master's degree for teaching, much less 4 extra fucking years and a residency to compare them to doctors?

The fucking salary of the waiter. You realize that waiters get paid less than minimum wage with the expectation that tips will make up for it right? In my state, the minimum wage is 11 dollars an hour. But it's 3.75 if you work a tipped job.

If the service is poor and the cost of food rises, then the restaurant will not be successful. That would seem to suggest that tipping and paying below minimum wage(which isn't even a "livable" wage; it doesn't even meet minimum requirements) is REQUIRED to run a successful restaurant. Where is the data that supports this?

It absolutely would if cost rose everywhere, which it would if every restaurant suddenly needed to pay their employees 8 extra dollars an hour. Plenty of cheap restaurants with shitty service and no tipping exist. Retail stores survive with shitty service. What the hell kind of world do you live in where if a store suddenly had to triple its workers salaries, you wouldn't see any change on your end?

>That would seem to suggest that tipping and paying below minimum wage(which isn't even a "livable" wage; it doesn't even meet minimum requirements) is REQUIRED to run a successful restaurant.
Keeping costs low is the number one way to run a successful business, and it's very well established that employees are almost always the biggest cost of a business. And again, your logic is flawed since restaurants with no tipping exist. They're just generally regarded as cheap shit because they're cheap and they're shit.

>if every restaurant suddenly needed to pay their employees 8 extra dollars an hour.
Well, not all of them. Just the waitstaff and delivery drivers. You won't have but so many people serving at the same time.

>employees are almost always the biggest cost of a business
Yet every employee that is not waitstaff can be paid normal wages. If hiring an employee is so expensive that you need to offset the cost with sub-minimum wage employment, then there is a problem with either your financing, industry, or whatever regulations are causing employment costs to be that high.

>restaurants with no/low tipping exist
Yes, like in much of Europe. Are they generally regarded as cheap and shit, or is this just an American problem? If it is the latter, then there's an underlying problem that needs to be observed. Tipping clearly isn't helping.

>>9892229
>What the hell kind of world do you live in where if a store suddenly had to triple its workers salaries, you wouldn't see any change on your end?
Again, we're talking an increase of perhaps 5-8 dollars per hour for a select few employees. If your restaurant can't afford to pay one position normal wages like the rest, there's a problem.

The tipping culture, to me, seems like an opportunity to exploit labor and customers. Agreeing to work shit wages + tips is gambling with your time. If you agree to that, you should be aware that you could be selling yourself short. By the way, it could be the case that customers decide to not tip. What happens then? The restaurant shuts down? Prices double? Or you just get fired?

>> No.9892307

>>9892280
I'm honestly still shocked that you believe if restaurants suddenly had to pay their waitstaff 5-8 dollars per hour more, you legitimately believe you would not see any changes on your end, and that restaurants would be happy to just eat the money. You're arguing theoreticals when the practical matter is that they would absolutely use it as an excuse to pass costs onto you or hire fewer employees.

I have a real-world example.
>local minimum wage increase goes into effect
>literally 75% of the employees at the local Taco Bell franchiser get raises
>all stores immediately slash hours, full-time employees are cut down to 30/week, anyone already working under full-time is cut down to 20, assistant managers are put back on hourly instead of salaried and required to work 40/week minimum
>changes stay in effect for several months until enough people quit that they can start bringing people back to full-time

And on the note of employment costs, would no employee ever receive a raise? Is a few extra dollars too much? Is there no line between keeping costs low and keeping them low enough? If it's just too much, I think our restaurant industry needs a readjustment.

>>9892175
Obviously being paid 100 USD per hour could be considered far too much, but minimum wage? What restaurant flatout can't afford to pay minimum wage?

>>9892307
Never said it wasn't possible that costs would be incurred. Rather, I was asking when and where has it been impossible for a restaurant to operate and offer services at a reasonable price while also paying all of its employees minimum wage or better without the need for tipping.

If restaurants are using that alleged cost as an EXCUSE to raise prices, then could it not be the case that it actually doesn't cost them that much? Again, I'm raising the question of normal wages and whether or not it would actually, regularly put restaurants in the red. I do not THINK this is the case, so yes, I am arguing that theoretically, this tipping-to-offset-cost notion is not necessary, and the culture behind obligatory tipping needs to die. It's supposed to be a bonus, not a crutch.

>>9892329
That's not the same instance. That is an increase to minimum wage resulting in higher pay for ALL employees in a restaurant. I'm referring to just waitstaff and delivery drivers being paid normal wages. Although, in that instance, they were able to devise a solution. Whether it was due to management being stingy or threat of the restaurant shutting down, I don't think we can tell with what information was given.

Here (Switzerland) it is expected of any worker to do their job the best they can. If they aren't laid enough they can just quit the job, a boss that isn't paying his employees well or worse exploits them has a good chance of not being successful and close.
Just this summer we had such a case with the Mike Wong restaurants (local Chinese fast food, got about 3 open restaurants in Geneva) "willingly" closed all his joints because he did not declare his employees and likely didn't paid them a correct wage. If we’re still talking about pizza delivery drivers and not stupid shit like postmates or doordash, I think they get all the tips, cash or credit, at the end of their shift when they clock out.

At least in Pizza Hut, once you’re shift as a driver is done, you take all your receipts and log them into the system, then the cashier/manager double checks the tips left on the receipt and pay you the tips from the cash drawer before you leave for home.

So the only think you’re getting in your paycheck every 2 weeks is the minimum wage money for the total hours you put in for your shifts.

The system changes

For example, in Southern California, the driver reimbursment is about 94cents per delivery for Pizza hut regardless of how many miles you drive per delivery.

Starting January the delivery fee will go up from 3$ to $4.25 in california, on top of a fucking 50 cent “service charge” that gets added to EVERY order, even carry out.

On top of that, every single pizza is now going to be more expensive. Pan Pizza will go up 1$ and Stuffed Crust will go up 3$
