I just woke up from a nap, something didn't feel right. Thought I might be having the DTs (which I was) and was out of whiskey in the house, so I hurried my ass to my car to run across the street to get some.

As I started driving my heart slowly started beating harder and faster; breathing slowed and my vision got blurry. Eventually it became hard to breath and it felt like my skeleton was about to jump out of its skin--surge of adrenaline caused by fight or flight as a result of the anxiety. The episode lasted around 5 minutes but felt like a week. As the anxiety calmed down my hands were shaking like I was outside in -15F weather.

I got my bottle no problem and took a maintenance dose of two shots. Still shaken up but it's calming down now.

Would not advise alcoholism. I'm weening right now. Want to quit all together by early Jan.

I know firsthand my mum has spent the better part of the last two years looking after him and spending money she doesn’t have trying to make sure he doesn’t kill himself, cleaning out his squalid house with buckets of stale piss and blood from drunks falls, driving to his house in the hills at 1 am when he calls and says he wants to die, etc. It’s just a shame that the rest of the family are slipping from concern to disdain at this continued behaviour, they’re losing patience quickly and making snide comments when he’s not here. Alcoholism really ruins entire families desu, I’m scared that if I ever went down that path that same path (I’ve come very close) my family would turn on me in the same way.

I've tried tapering with beer initially, didn't go well. Ended up in the ER because I felt like I was having a stroke; forgot everything that happened earlier in the day and still can't remember. Wasn't even drinking at the time, the memory loss occurred while sober. Maybe I was just tapering too fast. I've also read sometimes switching alcohol when tapering can have poor results like the aforementioned. I'm going to go a week with this 1 afternoon shot, 4 evening shots and reduce to 1/3, 0/3, 0/2, 0/1 over the next month and see if I can't get results that way.

I've been 5 months sober after tapering off for pretty much a few years

I wish I had better advice on how to do it but everyone's situation is different. The rules I stuck to where never to drink until evening (no drinking/being drunk during the day), and dropping down from liquor to wine, then progressively weaker beers. At that point I could quit without withdrawals but it was a matter of focusing on making my body feel good and focusing on how alcohol actually makes my body feel like shit

I got fucked up and lost my blanket a few days ago. I also have no heat.

The problem has since resolved itself, so I'm also attempting to resolve what got me through it. Thankfully, psychological addiction has never gotten its grasp around me, I have too many hobbies to let it.
