Right now, money is tight. I'm not the anon your post is directed to, but for the time being I base my purchases on what can get me the most alcohol for the least amount of money. Once my writing career starts to take off however, and I no longer have to pinch pennies, I plan on perusing and enjoying it more. I'll probably have a big whiskey phase eventually, see if I can try to develop a palate, try some 5 year old or 10 year old stuff once I've finished several bottles of the basic ones. Try to track down more absinthes because that shit is DELICIOUS, oh and LOTS of Guinness. Right now I wouldn't DREAM of buying Guinness because it's VERY high cost for not all that much alcohol content, it'd probably cost me $40 just to get drunk, maybe even $50. Yup, I just checked, and for a night of heavy drinking then it would indeed take $50 to get me loaded good and proper on Guinness meanwhile with the high-proof rum I typically go with, the same amount of alcohol content would cost me less than half that.

I guess what I'm trying to say with all this rambling is that you're right. Just because you're a drunk/alcoholic doesn't mean you can't enjoy your booze on a level beyond mere inebriation. Yes, with 10 year old whiskey I would eventually get drunk, but I'd get one of those proper whiskey-tasting glasses, add a teaspoon of water to help slightly dilute it to make it easier to taste/smell, and see what I come up with. Initially, probably nothing, but I'll experiment. Also, a thought, with high-dollar and high-quality stuff, like things that have aged a decade, I'll probably use that for my first few drinks but then once it comes time to actually start drinking I'll grab a bottle of cheaper stuff because the thought of just cracking open a bottle of aged liquor and finishing it in one night sounds terribly wasteful. I remember I once had a bottle of 15 year old rum, and this was in 2014 as I recall so it was actually initially brewed in the 20th century.

The best I've found for ethanol/$ is about 13ml of 100% alcohol per dollar. I generally drink about 250ml before I'm fully content, give or take 50ml, so that's right around $20 to get properly fucked up. I'll often have about 100ml within the first hour, around 33-50% of what I'll be drinking that night.

>>9871776
Welcome, and nice 'Murica digits. I had a 3-year period in which I drank basically daily. I assume a 'handle' is 60oz/1.75L? I've lived in a few different places in Canada but never heard the term used up here. As I recall, a bottle that size would last me a similar amount of time. I'd generally have at least 15oz of liquor a night, but having 20 was still pretty common, so sounds you between 2013-2017 and me between 2013-2016 were at just about the same place. Can't say I've ever had bladder pains or pee-pain before. I hear yeast infection can cause pain in piss though I don't know about bladder. Whatever the case, perhaps a trip to the doc is in order. Do you have medicare or Obamacare or whatever? If not, how much just to get checked out? Up here it's free, but the quality of care isn't as good as down in the US. People have died on waiting lists, waiting to get their surgery done or whatever. Socialized healthcare, much like almost anything that's socialized, isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I'm already looking forward to brewing my own booze sometime once I get the space for it. Beer, wine, rum, I'd like to try my hand at all sorts. Just gotta make sure I do it safely and don't end up drinking methanol and going blind or anything like that. As for drunk drivers, I've lost an uncle to such an accident, I have no sympathy for people who go drunk driving. Either they get caught and deal with legal/financial repercussions, or they get in an accident and deal with legal/financial/emotional repercussions if not end up outright dead. Even if some bastard goes drunk driving very regularly throughout their life but NEVER gets in an accident or anything like that, the studies and statistics clearly show that it's unbelievably dangerous. If someone goes around in day-to-day life with a revolver with a VERY silent action in their pocket with only one chamber loaded, and plays Russian roulette with random people who are completely unaware of it, but just so happens to go their whole life without actually shooting someone this way, that doesn't make them a good person! A major contributor to health issues is alcohol and tobacco, and the Government pays for those health issues, thus those two contributors are heavily taxed so as to pay for people suffering those health issues. It's only logical, but that doesn't mean I bloody like it. Is there socialized healthcare in the UK? If not, that'd explain why booze is cheaper there. If so, is it not as thorough as Canadian healthcare? If not, and if Brits aren't as heavily taxed in general as Canadians, then how much of a drain is it on the Government?

I don't think the aim is to reduce alcoholism, or at least that's not the main aim. Socialized healthcare, it's got to be. They're clearly getting a fuckload of tax money from the alcohol so even IF it's supposedly JUST to reduce alcoholism, the result is the same; more money towards the socialized healthcare that will ultimately go towards the medical bills of alcoholics once it starts to affect their system, which it eventually will.

>Is there socialized healthcare in the UK?
Yes, for all EU citizen (this is changing soon I guess).
The way gov handles money is way more complicated than "booze money goes into booze related health care system". Among other thing because health care money doesn't distinguish between health problems, it's more of a hospital/GPs/medications/etc thing at best.
Increasing taxes on alcohol reduce alcohol consumption and thus reduce alcohol taxes income. If they multiplied the price per 10, nobody would buy legal alcohol any more and there would be no income, instead of multiplying it by ten. Similarly, reducing prices increase sales and increase revenues. (It works the same way as how company handle they product prices. There are exceptions like luxury and Apple where increasing prices increase attractiveness, but it's rare.)
I'm pretty sure alcohol taxes don't make a lot of money compared to taxes on benefits or even VAT. (Remember you drink way more than the general population, of course for you it's your main tax.), and is very far from covering health care. It barely buys a few snowploughs for the roads.

Not for monetary reasons or anything like that, But the thrill of committing a crime and getting away with it.

Twice in 1 year, 7 years ago I would take my uninsured and unregistered motorcycle and ride up and down the street recklessly until I saw a cop. Then floor it until they have to stop chasing me

It was by far the 2 biggest rushes of my life. But at the same time extremely stupid and reckless

Volume * ABV / price.
A "drink" is often close to 10g or 10ml ethanol, the definition of a standard drink or alcohol unit (definitions depends on country, there are some others. 10ml ethanol is 7.89g)
Cheapest depends on local taxes, usually bottom shelve vodka is cheapest, but cider wins in UK.

I've drank a 1/2 liter of bourbon and a 6 pack of beer every day for the last 11 years. I recently got a job at a university which has great insurance, which i haven't had also in the last 10+ years. It took me 4 months to finally make the jump and do something about it. Went to the doctor and did a bunch of tests. My liver is not damaged, but slightly fatty, blood looks good, urine test came back great. I start recovery in the next week. They will monitor me as they slowly ween me off the alcohol since i was told by my doctor if i quit cold turkey or did it too fast i would die. I've wanted to quit in the last 2 years but havent been strong enough to make the move. I'm so ready for a life of sobriety(still going to toke). I also will enjoy not having to spend about $39 every other day. Glad my wife's stuck around as long as she did, she's been very supportive in helping me take my time to make the jump.

I've been ready for this for way too long. I'm going to miss Ice cold beer, and that delicious burn of the first sip of bourbon for the day.
Wish me luck guys.
