Most of us westerners have no idea what any of this food is like and only have our broad generalizations of soviets / communism to go on (hence the "Hurr durr communists eat nothing and/or bullets" ITT)

The main reason communism started being a thing in Russia was due to everyone starving from the incredibly poor logistical management of the Tsar at the end of WW1.
Everyone was hungry as fuck due to the mismanagement of the railways and would listen to anyone who promised something better.

So really eating nothing should be the essential "Russian Civil War" food, not the communist food. Once communism was brought in people got food. Not lots, but they at least got some. By the time the 60s and 70s came around Russia was doing pretty well.

Fuck. I grew up in communist Yugoslavia. My mother and grandmother always made a soup that was pure communism. I never knew the freedom of food until i came to America.

It was water. dry beans, vegeta(With msg. It was the only flavor we could get back then) and olive oil. Add beans and vegeta to the water. once the beans are squeezable and the water is cloudy it's ready. Add olive oil in the end. If my father came back from sea we could have some more vegetables in it. We sometimes put potato and carrot into it as well.

Genuine need can be hunting in state forests or target shooting at a range. The hunting excuse allows you a category A&B license which lets you have a bit of fun (Taurus Circuit Judge, Remington 7615P, Adler A110) whereas with range shooting you may only get a category A which means rimfire rifles and break open shotguns incl. Double barrel. You'll have to sit a short safety course which tells you how to handle and store guns then do a quick test.
